      Mr Matt Aldous, Headmaster

Welcome back to Redfield and the start of the 2023 academic school year. While it has been good and important for us to rest and rejuvenate over the Christmas and New Year break with family and friends, the return to school is a wonderful time of renewing friendships and catching up with mates, families and colleagues as we look forward to the year ahead and set goals and make plans.

There are many changes here at Redfield:new staff, new students, new initiatives... Change can unsettle us all, but, ultimately, if it improves things, dynamic change is a good thing.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new students and teachers who have joined our school this year. We welcome new staff members Mr Colin Lai and Mrs Lauren Kwon. There will be a chance to meet them and your sons’ other teachers this Monday, 13 February at our Term 1 Key Parent Function, beginning at 7:30pm. Please remember that this event is so important for us as a community. It is a great way to start the year. There will be an event for new parents earlier in the evening, but we will begin formal proceedings for all families with a plenary session in the COLA, where I will provide some news, updates and other useful information. Then you will have a chance to go to classrooms and other presentations relevant to your sons’ year groups. There are also many other great events that are coming up on our school calendar, so let’s get involved.

After some bad press recently, I think it would be good to begin the year with a feel-good story, a story that truly says who we are as a school. For many years, our boys have been encouraged to embrace and support a spirit of service through the school, their families and their community - a message that is shared between school and home. On Friday last week, Ben Gutierrez (Year 9), Noah Kim (Year 9) and Anthony Kim (Year 6) noticed that two young Primary fellows got on the wrong bus and ended up heading towards Castle Hill instead of Tangara. These older boys realised that they were lost and actually got off the bus with them at Castle Hill and took the Metro back to Cherrybrook to delivered them safely to the Tangara office! I really want to thank them personally for their good hearts! Well done, guys! This is a great example for us all to follow.

Finally, congratulations to the staff, students and families of the Class of 2022 for their wonderful efforts in navigating through unprecedented difficulties throughout their HSC and Preliminary HSC years. We are thankful that they were able to achieve some very pleasing results, and we are proud of the resilience and perseverance that they demonstrated throughout the year. We are also grateful for all the support they have received from the entire Redfield community.

"Get rid of that 'small-town' outlook. Enlarge your heart till it becomes universal, 'catholic'." (The Way, n. 7)

It is easy to get caught up in the events that seem to affect us in our immediate environment. Part of a Catholic identity is being able to look beyond this. One easy way to do so is to follow prayerfully the activities of the Pope. Recently, he visited South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It would be worth being informed about that journey.

Frequently, the Pope informs us about his prayer intentions. This week, it was the following: I remain close with all my heart to the people affected by the earthquake in #Türkiye and #Syria. I continue to pray for those who have lost their lives, as well as the injured, family members, and rescuers. May our concrete aid sustain them in the midst of this appalling tragedy. We could do well to make that prayer our own.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.

To provide consent for vaccination online, go to https://nswhealth.service-now.com/school,

      You will need:

      • your ServiceNSW log-in details, orcreate an account with ServiceNSWif you don’t already have one.
      • Medicare details for parents/carers and your child.

Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:

      • SMS notifications when vaccinations are given.
      • easy updating of your child’s details online.
      • faster upload of your child’s vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

NSW Health is waiting for the outcome of a review by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination schedule. International evidence indicates that one dose of HPV vaccine provides equivalent protection to two-dose. If a one dose-schedule is endorsed, NSW Health will contact all parents of students who have been consented for two doses of the vaccine and also parents of students who have received one dose of HPV vaccine (to advise that they are up to date and do not require any further doses).

      Welcome to 2023

      Welcome to 2023

It is great to be back and start a new year at Redfield. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our families for 2023. In Primary, we are all looking forward to a great year and are excited about continuing your son's educational journey.

I would like to extend a special welcome to all of our new families who have joined our school community. Starting a new school can be difficult, and we are here to support you. I am confident that your son will thrive in our supportive and inclusive environment.

We are blessed to have a brilliant Primary team who are working hard with your sons. We have one new staff member, Mrs Lauren Kwon, who will be teaching Music. She has replaced Mrs Cecilia Pensini who left us at the end. Mrs Kwon has extensive teaching experience and will be at school on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. A few of our talented Class Teachers have moved to different grades where they are enjoying the changes and new challenges.

I am pleased to report that the year has started well, and it is rewarding to see the boys arriving at school with large smiles. The teachers have been happy with the way the boys have quickly settled in and are actively engaging in meaningful work. During the first couple of weeks, the teachers have been focusing on getting to know their students and easing them back into the routines of school life.

The teachers are looking forward to meeting you at the upcoming KPF on Monday, 13 February. You already should have received information in relation to this event and it will be wonderful to have it on site. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your son's teachers and hear about what they will be learning this year. We believe that a strong partnership between the school and home is vital for the success of your son and we look forward to working with you.

As you are aware, the Primary Swimming Carnival is coming up on Wednesday, 15 February, and, hopefully, you have already given permission for your son to attend. Unfortunately, last year's swimming carnival was cancelled, so we are very much looking forward to it this year. Mr Roberts has been working hard to make it a great event where everyone will have fun. You are welcome to come and cheer on your son and his House.

I have noticed in the playground that a number of children are not wearing their hats. We have a "no-hat-no-play" policy ,and those boys who are not wearing a hat are seated under cover. Please ensure that your son has a Redfield hat and that it is clearly labelled with his name. We encourage the boys to take responsibility for their belongings but, unfortunately, things still have a tendency to go missing. If they are clearly labelled, it is easier to return them to the owner.

It is going to be an exciting year, and I am confident that, with your support and our commitment to excellence, your sons will have a successful and fulfilling year.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Welcome to the 2023 school year at Redfield – to everyone, especially our new students and staff. I hope that, with the first two weeks completed, everyone has settled in well.

Last year, I spoke about the importance of balancing the different aspects of our life – academic, social, physical and spiritual. The beginning of the year is a very good time to set goals which help us achieve this balance. I would like to recommend a small formula for you all:

      1) set high-quality goals,

      2) create a plan of attack, and

      3) aim high.

However, don’t be afraid to fall short. This is expected with setting goals that are challenging; we build up to them over time. Make sure you spend time sitting down with your mentors and parents to discuss your goals.

On the community/social front, I want to spotlight the small group of Primary students who took part in the Kicking Goals for Sick Kids on Friday, 27 January in the holidays. Well done to the boys who proudly represented Redfield to raise funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. Huge thanks also go to the parents and families for all their efforts with coordinating the event.

Once more, I would like to give a huge shout-out to the three young Redfield students – Noah Kim (Year 9), Anthony Kim (Year 6) and Ben Gutierrez (Year 9) who helped two of our new Year 2 boys travel safely home on Friday afternoon after the two boys had missed their bus. After realising that the Year 2 boys were lost, these gentlemen caught the metro and delivered the boys to their final destination. Thank you, Noah, Anthony and Ben!

Mr Andreas Engesser, Deputy Headmaster (Curriculum)

To begin the academic year in the best way possible, students in Years 7 to 11 have been issued with their Student Information Guides for 2023. These booklets, which are available digitally on the Middle School and Senior School Canvas courses, contain critical information about assessment procedures, as well as relevant assessment schedules for each subject in each grade.

Over the past two weeks, all grades attended presentations delivered by the Head of Middle School, Stefan Drevikovsky, and the Head of Senior School, Mark Anderson, outlining the contents of these booklets. Year 12 students received their booklets in Term 4 last year.

It is an expectation of the College that all students are familiar with and adhere to the procedures in these booklets to ensure that tasks are completed in the correct manner.

In the photo below, Jonah Errazo (Year 7), Christian Harb (Year 8), Marcus Kroeger (Year 9), Christopher Gebrayel (Year 10) and Gabriel Choi (Year 11) proudly show off their Student Information Guides.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome all students and families back to Redfield for 2023!

I am especially excited for our new arrivals in the Senior School, Year 10. Having taught them for many years, I know their many qualities and characteristics, and I am sure that they will throw themselves into their senior years of high school with gusto and enthusiasm.

With the KPF fast approaching, I will keep this update brief, as many of the points will be explored further on Monday evening.

      Culture of Excellence & Interviews

At our Senior School assembly, College Captain Amin Abboud spoke at length about continuing to build a culture of excellence at Redfield. Focusing on the academic hopes and goals for the Class of 2023, he emphasised that everyone’s effort matters and contributes to the culture and achievement of the grade. It was a passionate and logical call to action.

I am pleased to say that students in Senior School have begun the year well, focusing consistently in classes and applying themselves to the many enriching and challenging activities they experience.

In particular, our first ever Non-ATAR Pathway students have begun their studies. At Redfield, we recognise that excellence takes many forms and that not all interests and careers are catered for by a traditional HSC/ATAR pathway. As a result, we have implemented an alternative pathway with a greater vocational focus which some students are currently enjoying.

Lastly, Years 11 and 12 students will soon be attending Culture of Excellence Interviews. Run by senior members of staff, these interviews provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their previous efforts and achievement, while setting goals and implementing specific changes to grow and develop in their academic outcomes. Information from these meetings will be sent to parents and mentors at the conclusion of each interview.

Monday Afternoon Study Club (Years 10 to 12)

This year, we are welcoming Year 10 to the Monday Afternoon Study Club, held from 3:00pm to 5:30pm in the College Library.

These sessions provide workshops targeted at HSC skills and content, run by teachers or recent high-achieving graduates. Subject-specific workshops will mostly be for Year 12 students. Years 10 and 11 students will have the opportunity for silent or small-group study, with general study skills, English and Maths workshops offered.

A program will be distributed at the end of Week 3 listing the workshops on offer in Term 1. The first study afternoon is Monday, 13 February (Week 3).

Cost: $10 per afternoon, invoiced to parents

      Careers Advisor - Mr Magann

Senior School students are encouraged to speak with Mr Magann if they have questions about opportunities or pathways after school. He is a wealth of information, particularly for Year 12 students interested in the courses or scholarships available to them at university.

Further careers-related information will be distributed to students via the Senior Studies Canvas course that all Year 10, 11 and 12 students are enrolled in.

      Public Speaking Workshop

As a final reminder, students in Years 10 to 12 (2023) are invited to participate in a Public Speaking program starting in Week 4.

Run by award-winning speaker and trainer Dale Rees-Bevan, the six-week program will take place on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15pm to 4:45pm, starting on Tuesday, 21 February.

Through introducing speakers, giving speeches, providing feedback and presenting impromptu talks, students will learn specific techniques to command an audience’s attention, address groups with confidence and present themselves as leaders in an appropriate manner.

The program costs $99, and there is a limit of 20 participants. Currently there are only THREE places remaining. Priority will be given to Senior School students.

Over the first three days of the new school year, Secondary's newest students participated in a series of presentations, activities and workshops as part of the Year 7 Orientation Program.

The aim of the program was to prepare students as much as possible for the many and varied aspects of life in high school. With subject presentations from each of their teachers, information sessions about assessment and Redfield's culture of excellence, workshops about classwork expectations and a double period of sport, there was plenty for the students to learn and enjoy.

It is our hope that the program will have set up our Year 7 boys for a successful high school career at Redfield.

Mathematics - The Subject that Counts

Mathematics - The Subject that Counts

Redfield had another successful year in Mathematics last year. 47% of all Year 12 students who studied any course of Mathematics at Redfield in 2022 achieved a Band 6 result. This means almost half of the students achieved a mark higher than 90% for their respective Mathematics courses. We are proud of their efforts and we will continue our high expectations for our current Year 12 students this year.

      Private Music Tuition

      TUITION AGREEMENT

The Redfield College Music Tuition Program enables all students to learn and excel in the study of a range of instruments. Under the guidance of our professional instrumental tutors, students are able to develop and master the skills of playing their chosen instruments, thus cultivating a love for Music.

      Our tutors are:

      Mrs Katia Pronin (Piano/Voice)
      Mrs Jacqueline Menge (Flute)
      Mr Mark Cinque (Guitar)
Mr Adrian Tuero (Clarinet and Saxophone)
Mr Pawel Lewandowski (Drums and Percussion)
Ms Hannah Alexander (Trumpet, Trombone and Voice)
Mrs Amber Thatcher (Clarinet, Saxophone and Voice)

To secure the arrangements for your son’s music tuition in 2023, please read the terms, conditions and expectations of this agreement, and then sign the ‘Music Tuition Agreement’ page and return it to your son’s tutor. Places are limited and are available on a ‘first in, first served’ basis, so please return this form at your earliest convenience.

Please be aware that your son’s level of success in the program is dependent on his application and adherence to the following guidelines.

      Lesson Times

      • Music tuition will occur during school terms only. Lesson times commence from 8:30am for Secondary students (8:00am in some instances for Senior School students) and 10:30am for Primary students. The last lesson of the day concludes at 3:00pm.
      • End times can be subject to change in consultation with the Music Tuition Coordinator.
      • Lessons run for 30 minutes. However, Senior School students are able to request longer lessons if desired.
      • Lessons work on a rotational system, meaning that lesson times change from week to week so that students do not have a music lesson at the same time in consecutive weeks.
      • Given that lessons have a duration of 30 minutes, students will not miss an entire period of curricular classes.
      • Preliminary and HSC students have priority when specific lesson times have been requested.
      • No Secondary lessons will take place during exam weeks.

      Practice and Equipment

It is expected that students involved in the program:

      • complete regular practice at home as directed by their music tutor.
      • bring all equipment, including instruments, music and music diaries to all lessons. If a student does not bring his instrument, a replacement will be used when possible. This will be noted by the tutor and the Music Tuition Coordinator will be informed. If this becomes a regular occurrence, parents will be notified. If you require instrument hire, the Music Department can offer you a range of instruments for a termly fee.
      • use the practice diary provided by their music tutor. This diary will provide a medium for communication between the music tutor, the student and his parents. The diary will be used by the tutor to include details of weekly homework and the next scheduled lesson time, and it is expected that the student’s daily practice will be recorded and verified by a parent’s signature.

      Absence

As a courtesy, please inform your son’s music tutor if there are any issues regarding lesson attendance:

      • If your son is absent on the day of a lesson, the tutor is to be notified by 8:00am. In this case, the lesson will either be rescheduled or credited to the next term’s invoice, subject to the tutor’s availability.
      • If your son is absent on the day of a lesson and the tutor has not been notified by the aforementioned time, full lesson fees will apply with no rescheduling or credit of the lesson.

      Payment

      • Music tuition lessons are charged at the rate of $43.00 per half hour.
      • Invoices are created based on one full term of lessons.
      • All invoices will be distributed by the music tutor at the conclusion of the previous term, with payment expected by Week 2 of that term (or Week 4 in the case of Term 1).
      • Please be aware that the choice of your son to commence or continue music tuition is an annual commitment. Each music tutor allocates time to Redfield College according to the number of students he or she teaches and therefore relies on maintaining those students as a fundamental part of their employment and income.
      • Should the situation arise where a student seeks to discontinue enrolment in the Music Tuition Program during a school term, the student must complete the remainder of the current term as a minimum. If this is not possible, the student must complete 4 weeks of lessons upon notification of ceasing involvement in the program.

      Performance Opportunities

      • Throughout the year, there are several opportunities for students to perform at various school events. Attendance and performance at these events are an integral part of the Music Tuition Program.
      • AMEB examinations may be offered to students based upon experience, progress and standard of performance. Please feel free to contact your son’s tutor if you have any questions about this process.

We look forward to witnessing your son’s musical journey.

Ordination of Old Boy Deacon Matthew Dimian

Ordination of Old Boy Deacon Matthew Dimian

On Thursday, 2 February, Redfield Old Boy Matthew Dimian (Class of 2010) was ordained to the Presbyterate by Bishop Vincent Long at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta.

The Redfield presence was strong at the ordination: Old Boy Fr Chris Del Rosario (Class of 2010) acted as Master of Ceremonies and Old Boy Christian Catsanos (Class of 2011) a composed a hymn as a gift to Fr Matthew, which was played during the offertory. He gave a special blessing to his classmates in attendance.
In an interview with the Catholic Outlook, he stated, “All throughout school, my desire to be a priest grew and grew. Attending Redfield College bolstered my faith, and I received great formation there. I was very lucky to have a chapel at my school, and I remember going there often. It became a refuge and I felt a great sense of peace and a lot of joy in Our Lord’s presence in the Eucharist." Congratulations, Fr Matthew!

      Japanese Exchange Program

      Japanese Exchange Program

As part of Redfield's longstanding exchange program with Seido Mikawadei School in Nagasaki, Japan, we welcomed their Principal, Mr Yuji Hirota, for a brief visit from Thursday, 2 February to Monday, 6 February.

Yuji, whose last visit to Redfield was 16 years ago, had a packed itinerary for his five-day stay, including lesson observations and a visit to Wollemi College. It was wonderful to see him at our school again, and we thank him for his visit.

We also welcome Year 12 student Sho Yamasaki, who will be with us until the end of Week 3. During his stay, Sho will be hosted by the Attard and John families and attend Years 10 and 11 classes. I would like to thank these two families for their generous hospitality and wish Sho a very enjoyable stay. Read more about his in-class experiences below.

      Stefan Drevikovsky, Exchange Program Coordinator

Our wonderful Japanese exchange student Sho has hit the ground running in Year 10 D&T classes, pressing a penny skateboard made out of plywood on his very first day at the workshop, assisted by some of his very cooperative classmates.

Sho has a very short window to complete his project, but he has worked with solid dedication and skill, and is now on track to have the skateboard lacquered, wrapped with griptape and drilled in time for his return to Japan.

It is a delight to share our learning space and Year 10 project with Sho.

      Leo Carol, Head of D&T
