Term 4 has started and we are two weeks deep already! Term 4 is one of those crazy, hectic terms where we cram double the amount of what we do into only nine weeks.
The HSC has started well, and the students of the graduating Class of 2023, I think, were just happy to get under way. Please keep them in your prayers. It was great to receive the wonderful news that some of our HSC students have been nominated for possible inclusion in Encore(for Music) and Shape(for Design & Technology). These are events where NESA selects the best performances and bodies of work to be showcased in 2024. While it is only a nomination for possible inclusion, just to be shortlisted is a significant achievement - well done to those boys and their teachers!
I would like to announce that, in 2024, Mr Andreas Engesser will be stepping back from his role as Deputy Headmaster and will be working part time at Redfield. It is not farewell, but it marks a significant moment in Redfield's history as well as Andreas's personal story. Andreas has been a tireless advocate for what our schools represent. For 30 years, he has dedicated his time to ensuring that everything we do here is professional and of a high standard. Whether in the classroom, mentoring, looking after parents or following up with students, Andreas is the example of what we describe as a Redfield teacher. Thanks, Andreas; you have made PARED a better organisation. Thanks also from all the staff who consider you more than just a colleague, but a friend.
Maybe this is the worst-kept secret, but David Vassallo, the current Deputy Headmaster at Wollemi, will be joining us in 2024 as our new Deputy Headmaster and Head of Pastoral and Service Learning.
I had the privilege of working with David at Wollemi and can attest to his great dedication and commitment to boys' education. He has a passion for student wellbeing and community service and will add much to the life of the College. His enthusiasm and experience will certainly help the educational outcomes of our students continue to rise and drive our culture of excellence, particularly in student circles, to new levels.
David spent 20 years working at The Kings School as a house and boarding master, as well as in a number of other leadership roles. He has been at Wollemi as the Deputy for the last four years. He is married to Sarah and they have three young girls who attend our sister school Tangara. I know that David is keen to get here and start meeting you all. I will take this opportunity to congratulate David on his appointment and welcome him to Redfield. I am sure you all will make him feel welcome, as I know you did when I arrived.

Japan Exchange Trip
Japan Exchange Trip
On Monday, 2 October, seven Redfield students embarked on a whirlwind trip to Japan, accompanied by Mr Jason Hatcher.
The boys were hosted by families from our brother school Seido Mikawadai in Nagasaki, and theyhad a wonderful time being immersed in Japanese language and culture during their two-week stay.
They returned full of enthusiasm and with many stories to tell about their experiences.
I would like to thank Mr Hatcher, who did an outstanding job of looking after the group, and my counterpart from Seido Mikawadai, Mr Michio Fukuda, for ensuring that every detail of the trip ran so smoothly.
The participants were: Jacob Bernardo, Jackson Busch, Benicio Gutierrez, Linus Kang, Noah Kim and Tyrone Lee from Year 9, and Gianmarco Callegaro from Year 10.
Below are several photos and some of their observations.

Year 7 Father & Son Camp
Year 7 Father & Son Camp
Nestled in the breathtaking Blue Mountains, Blue Gum Lodge offers a perfect setting for a memorable Father & Son Camp. Over the course of two incredible days, fathers and sons embark on an adventure of bonding, exploration, and laughter. As the sun rises over the majestic peaks, the air fills with the scent of pine and anticipation.
Together, father and son set out on hikes through lush trails, breathing in the crisp mountain air and marveling at the towering blue gums that line their path. The campgrounds resonate with the joyous laughter of children and the heartfelt conversations between fathers and sons. The days are filled with countless activities like indoor football, building and shooting catapults, playing on the tennis court and navigating the grounds in push carts.
From scaling up rock climbing walls to having a cool-off in the pool, the boys and the fathers enjoyed it all. Amidst the excitement, fathers and sons find comfort in the tranquility of the surroundings, forging a deeper connection as they share stories around the crackling campfire. As night falls, the starry sky becomes a canvas of wonder, igniting young minds with curiosity and awe. The Blue Gum Lodge offers cosy cabins where father and son can rest after an eventful day, rejuvenating their spirits for another day of adventure.
The camp fosters an atmosphere of trust and growth, encouraging fathers and sons to embrace new challenges and create lasting memories together. It is a place where bonds are strengthened, fears are conquered and love is celebrated. The Blue Gum Lodge Father & Son Camp is an unparalleled experience that not only creates cherished memories but also instils valuable life lessons and strengthens the unbreakable bond between father and son. This all was made possible by the sons, the fathers, Mr Peter Harb and Fr Phil Elias. This was a great camp and we hope to come back in the future.

From the Chaplain
God and Caesar
God and Caesar

This week in Chapel period, the Secondary boys have been reflecting on Jesus' words in the Gospel this Sunday: Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God(Matthew 22:21).
Christians in the early Church were persecuted because they refused to offer to Caesar the worship owed only to God. In more recent times, totalitarian regimes have tried to remove God and set themselves up in His place. But giving to Caesar what belongs to God can happen any time people put something human in the place of God: idolising money, celebrity, fitness, leisure or technology; putting off religious duties (especially Sunday Mass) for the sake of work, holidays or even family events; or giving in to fear when our faith is challenged.
Jesus also asks us to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. This goes well beyond simply paying taxes. It implies taking on our responsibility as Christians to contribute to the world in which we live. A follower of Christ could neglect to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar when he considers himself above the legitimate law of the land, when he puts forward a religious answer to questions of a purely scientific, political or economic nature, or simply when he neglects to take his work or studies seriously.
God wants Christians in the world to be like leaven in the dough. Giving to Caesar what belongs to Caesar implies having a positive and open attitude towards the world and contributing to its improvement. In this way, Christians are also giving to God what belongs to Him.

Captain's Corner
Captain's Corner

It is with great pleasure that I have been given the opportunity to be the College Captain of 2024. I would like to thank our outgoing Captains Amin Abboudand Isaac Buschfor their extraordinary efforts and dedication to our school. I ask that we keep them and the rest of the cCass of 2023 in our prayers as they sit their HSC Exams.
The Class of 2023 has left us with big shoes to fill, but I have no doubt that the new leadership team of 2024 will live up to those standards. With Vice-Captain Jonathan Abdow, as well as the House Captains Eugene Woo(Castor), Jonathan Nassif(Altair), Andrew Gaitau(Sirius) and Jacob Elias(Hydrus), I am sure we will leave behind an iconic legacy for the younger years to build upon.
I would like to take this opportunity to properly introduce myself as the College Captain of 2024.
Although I am known as Gabriel, I am more widely referred to as Oogi. This originates from my Korean name (Yong-Ook) which was given to me by my grandfather sixteen years ago. I am the youngest of four, with two older sisters, Clara and Elysia, and an older brother, Michael, who all went to Tangara and Redfield from Kindergarten to Year 12. When I first came to Redfield, I was greeted by Mr Ramos, the Head of Primary at the time, and was sat in the 2S classroom led by Mr Sarks. Those Primary days are truly unforgettable and forged me into the man I am today. My greatest joys and friendships have come from my experiences not only with my fellow students but also with the teachers, so I am so honoured and delighted to be given the role of Captain.
In my whole-school assembly speech on Tuesday, I talked about maintaining a balance throughout the school year, which is the leadership team’s main goal for this year. The quote from Katie Thurms that “you can't do a good job if your job is all you do” really sticks out for me.
It is essential that we are involved in playing sports and spending time with family and friends on top of the hard work we put to paper. Balance is always hard to measure but, with prayer and good decisions, it can be mastered.
So, for my first message to Redfield, I ask that we maintain a healthy work/life balance. There’s no need to overburden yourself with study - just take one step at a time and, lastly, enjoy the end of the year!

The Australian Geography Competition 2023
The Australian Geography Competition 2023
All students from Redfield College studying Geography tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2023 Australian Geography Competition. The competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland.
The competition aims to encourage student interest in Geography and to reward student excellence. Geography is such an important subject because it develops in students a holistic understanding of the world around them and their place in it.
Over 65,000 students from 700 schools across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition, so the results give us an external benchmark as to how our students are performing in certain aspects of Geography.
Overall, students from Redfield performed well. They were tested on their knowledge, application, and reasoning skills. Those who achieved in the top 1 % and those who received a High Distinction or Distinction were presented with their certificates at this week's whole-school assembly.
Congratulations to these students and all the other students who participated. Other certificates of achievement will be issued at a later date.

Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum
Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum
One week ago, the 2024 leadership team had the privilege of attending the well-renowned Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum. The three-day forum is a chance for Year 11 students to come together and share thoughts and ideas on how to be great, inspirational leaders in their schools. At the forum, we got to experience first-hand the wisdom and knowledge of exceptional leaders and speakers who shared their personal stories and secrets about what it takes to be a great leader each and every day.
The main highlight of the forum was the vast range of speakers. The forum circulates around three major values of courage, service and integrity and on each day, there were multiple speakers who provided insight into these core values. Among these speakers were:
Matt Kershaw: When Matt was 19, a large tumor was removed from his chest. After this major life event, he decided to stop following the crowd. Matt spoke to us about not being followers and making our own decisions. “Take the driver's seat; choose your own destination” were his exact words. Since his major operation, Matt has scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania 13 times and led hundreds to the summit. It was really inspiring to hear from Matt first-hand.
Botille Vette-Welsh: Botille Vette-Welsh is a New Zealand-born Australian rugby league player who plays for the Wests Tigers in the NRLW. Botille spoke to us about what it meant to represent her country and lead her teammates. She mentioned how leaders need to understand those around them and need to be willing to make sacrifices.
Josh and Nathan Katz: These Australian brothers, both Commonwealth Games bronze medalists in judo, were very motivating. They mainly talked about reaching our full potential not only as leaders but in life. They shared their personal experiences about discipline and talked about the importance of creating big, ambitious goals and staying committed to achieving them.
Barnaby Howarth: After suffering a series of setbacks, Barnaby spoke to us about the importance of resilience. Using nothing more than the resilience inside him, he has played in the AFL for the Sydney Swans, hosts an interview show, has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and made an AFL come-back to play his hundredth game for his local footy club. Barnaby told us to just “give things a crack”.
The leadership team also got to participate in various activities such as the wacky Olympics and community service. These activities allowed us to connect with each other and were enjoyable to be a part of. Overall, the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum provided great insight into leadership for 2024 and was a great experience which I recommend for future student leaders.
Jonathan Abdow, 2024 College Vice-Captain
