I am writing this as I look out over the skyline of Manila, capital of the Philippines, from my hotel room. I have been so appreciative of the warm, wonderful reception that so many people have offered here in my first few days. Along with the other principals of all our Australian PARED schools, I am attending two conferences here. The first focuses on building bridges and collaboration between English-speaking schools. The second is with Professors of Navarre University as we study in more depth character education in schools. I have met people from Kenya, Spain, Nigeria, America and, obviously, the Philippines. It is great to see that the spirit of the Jubilee Year of Hopeis very much alive and strong in this group as we touch on key ideas in character education and virtues. Today, we attended South Ridge College. It is an impressive place with its 1200 students, and they do a fantastic job of making the implicit aspect of what we do explicit. From the messaging of virtues communicated around the school to the many programs and initiatives that they have here, it is wonderful to see.
What an Open Day we had on Thursday, 20 February. It was great to have so many families wanting to come and see what all the fuss is about. Many were deeply impressed with the tour and the excellent manners and contributions of our student guides, as well as our wonderful grounds, excellent staff, mentoring system and outstanding NAPLAN and HSC results. If you know a family whose son/s would benefit from our programs here at Redfield, make sure you let them know about the College and our next Open Day so they don’t miss out! It is great to hear from many families that have been referred to us because of families that are already benefiting from a Redfield education. Remember, you are our best promotion, so keep up the good work.
Lent and the challenges it presentswill be our formational focus at Redfield over the next few weeks. Traditionally, of course, the boys target lollies, TV, the internet and other such delights as the things they think they can do without for a few weeks. This can be tough for anyone, and we will encourage this, but we are also keen for the boys to branch out.
With Lent about to commence, the Holy Father has released his Lenten message for the year. Click on this linkto read the full text for yourself. As you may be aware, the Pope has recently been unwell. Please pray for his return to good health. Even though he is unwell, like a loving Father, he still worries about and cares for his children. There are many beautiful, thoughtful things here to consider as we move towards the Lenten season starting next Wednesday. This was one that resonated particularly with me:
As Pope Benedict XVI taught us in the Encyclical Spe Salvi, "the human being needs unconditional love". This, then, is the third call to conversion: a call to hope, to trust in God and his great promise of eternal life. Let us ask ourselves: Am I convinced that the Lord forgives my sins? Or do I act as if I can save myself? Do I long for salvation and call upon God’s help to attain it? Do I concretely experience the hope that enables me to interpret the events of history and inspires in me a commitment to justice and fraternity, to care for our common home and in such a way that no one feels excluded?
On another note, you will notice that our sports clubs currently have registration days on. Our clubs play a vital role in community building and character development, and our Basketball, Rugby and Football teams win many games in the process, but that is a happy by-product. Let's never forget that children's sport is an instrument for character development, for building social skills as well as such solid human virtues as perseverance, realism and sincere, best effort.
Please keep up your prayers in your families for so many intentions. Let us keep the Pope’s health and his intentions close to our thoughts and prayers. We must never underestimate the power of prayer. Please pray for a great conference and a safe trip home for me and the other PARED principals. I return on the 8 March.

Students will complete a series of four online assessments in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. The schedule of assessments for all of these year groups is as follows:
Note that students who are absent for any of the online assessments above will have opportunities to catch up on any day from Thursday, 13 March to Monday, 24 March.
The results of these tests will provide important information to Redfield about what each student can do and will be used to support the development and implementation of teaching and learning programs in the school. All parents will receive a report indicating their son's level of achievement. Each student's level of achievement will be reported against the National Minimum Standard.
Please note that all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in these tests. In addition, a set of wired headphones or earbuds is required by your son, as there are audio prompts throughout the tests. The school is unable to supply this equipment for your son.

Father & Son Breakfast
Father & Son Breakfast
Last Tuesday, a team of generous dads hosted a Father & Son Breakfast for over 100 people in the Atrium. A big thank you goes to Buddy Jilwan, Fayad Tohme and Joe El-Sabbagh for preparing manoush, coffee and other treats to foster friendship and community at Redfield!
The Atrium was buzzing with activity, and it was great to see a number of mentors working the floor and meeting new dads. The team plans to run this event every term, so stay tuned.
It is wonderful to see many dads dropping their sons off to school in the morning, and what better way than to include breakfast to get the day started? I was very impressed with a number of boys who helped to set up and pack up the room to make things easier for the dads.

The Wonder Approach: Rescuing Children's Innate Desire to Learn
The Wonder Approach: Rescuing Children's Innate Desire to Learn
The Canadian Catherine L'Ecuyer, a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Sciences and Psychology, is the author of The Wonder Approach: Rescuing Children's Innate Desire to Learn, which I highly recommend to every parent. The book is about how to awaken children's natural sense of wonder for learning, discovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. It is a very appropriate book to read in these times of overstimulation, when maintaining attention has become a greater challenge both at home and in schools.
Catherine L’Ecuyer recently shared a list of books she personally recommends for different ages, which I have found very helpful. Nowadays, with so many options available, it can be difficult to know if a book is truly appropriate for our children. I thought I would share this list with you to help your sons find some great books to read.
The criteria used to compile these lists include respect for children's innocence, their developmental stages and rhythms, the beauty of the illustrations and the message of a secure and healthy relationship between parents and children. It offers something beyond mere entertainment.
For children aged 7 to 10:
1. The Little Prince
2. The Man Who Planted Trees (pop-up edition)
3. Platero and I
4. Johan and Peewit
5. Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales
6. Tintin
7. Bedtime Stories by Enid Blyton
8. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
9. A Christmas Carol
10. Asterix and Obelix
11. Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver
12. The Children of the Noisy Village
For pre-teens aged 10 to 12:
1. The Knight in Rusty Armor
2. The Secret Seven by Enid Blyton
3. Two Years' Vacation (adaptation)
4. The Man Who Planted Trees
5. The Little Prince
6. Tintin
7. Asterix and Obelix
8. Johan and Peewit
9. The Famous Five
10. The Happy Hollisters
11. Adventure Series by Enid Blyton

We have had a fantastic start to the year in Primary, with students settling in well and embracing their learning with enthusiasm. It has been particularly pleasing to welcome so many new boys to Redfield, and we are delighted to see them integrating so well into our school community.
One of the highlights of the term so far has been our successful Primary Swimming Carnival. Huge thanks go to Mr Corey Rawlingsand the Primary team for their excellent organisation, ensuring the event ran smoothly. It was wonderful to see so many boys competing, giving their best effort and earning valuable points for their House. I also thank the parents who attended and supported their sons -it made the day even more special.
While all the boys gave a tremendous effort, there could only be one winner. At our recent whole-school assembly, we proudly announced Siriusas the Swimming Champions for this year. We also recognised our Swimming Age Champions (listed below), who were enthusiastically congratulated by their peers. Looking ahead, we wish Mr Rawlings and our selected boys all the best as they represent Redfield at the HZSA Swimming Carnival on Monday, 3 March.
Additionally, at the start of the year, each class selected student leaders for various responsibilities. These leadership roles are taken seriously, and we commend the boys who have stepped up to serve their peers and the school community. Congratulations to all the students who have been entrusted with these positions.

Our Cross Country Carnival will take place on 2 April at school. Students have already begun training during PE lessons, and I encourage boys to continue their training at home. Boys who are turning 7, 8, 9 and 10 will run 2000 metres, while those turning 11 and 12+ will complete a 3000-metre course. We look forward to seeing the boys challenge themselves and give their best effort on the day. More information will be sent home closer to the date.
It was wonderful to see so many parents at our recent KPF. We hope you found the night informative and encourage you to reach out to your son's Class Teacher if you have any questions.
Coming up in Week 6, our Years 3 and 5 boys will be sitting NAPLAN tests. This is not something to fear, and the boys are encouraged to do their best without stress. Please ensure that they get a good night's sleep before each test to help them perform to their potential.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to a wonderful year ahead with many more achievements and memorable moments.

Welcome to our Year 2 Boys!
Welcome to our Year 2 Boys!
We extend a big Redfield welcome to our newest Year 2 boys!
The students have settled in beautifully and are already embracing all the exciting learning opportunities at their new school. Mr Hatcher and Mr Schweikert are incredibly proud of how quickly the boys have adapted to their new routines and are thriving in their new environment.
Each week, the boys attend Mass, where they are learning about the different parts of the celebration and growing in their understanding of the Faith. In the classroom, they have jumped into reading groups and even started using the school computers - a very exciting step in their learning journey! It's not all just reading and computers; our Year 2s are also learning Spanish (¡Hola!) and discovering their musical talents in Music.
It’s been a fantastic start to the year, and we can’t wait to see how much more they achieve in the weeks ahead!
Keep up the great work, boys!
Jason Hatcher, Deputy Head of Primary

Geek Academy Coding Club - Building, Coding & Racing!
Geek Academy Coding Club - Building, Coding & Racing!
Each week, a group of 20 enthusiastic young engineers gather after school for the Geek Academy Coding Club, where they dive into the exciting world of robotics and coding! Led by Robotics and Coding expert Miss Elaine alongside Mr Hatcher, the boys work in teams to design, build and program LEGO robots and race cars.
Using iPads and coding software, the boys learn valuable skills such as sequencing, problem solving and logical thinking. This week, our classroom transformed into a Grand Prix racetrack, with teams coding their LEGO race cars to speed across the finish line. The challenge required precision, teamwork and creative thinking, resulting in some epic races!
Geek Academy is not only about learning to code but also about collaboration, perseverance and having fun while tackling exciting challenges. Enrolments for next term will be announced in upcoming editions of The Red, so stay tuned if your son is keen to join the adventure!

Rock-Paper-Scissors with a Digital Twist
Rock-Paper-Scissors with a Digital Twist
Year 8 students in Mr Tropiano’s Technology classes recently put their coding skills to the test as part of their Technology subject about learning how to program a micro:bit microcontroller to play the classic hand game Rock-Paper-Scissors.
As part of their digital technologies unit, students wrote their own code using the onboard accelerometer and the “on shake” gesture, downloaded it onto their micro:bit devices and then faced off in a fun, luck-based competition. The excitement built as students tested their programs and competed against each other, with each round determining who would move closer to victory.
In the end, only one lucky student emerged as the ultimate champion in each class, earning a congratulatory round of applause - and, of course, bragging rights. The activity was a hands-on way for students to develop their coding abilities while enjoying a friendly competition.

Captain's Corner
Captain's Corner
One of the most powerful tools that we have is the ability to use our will to form habits. What we are able to do with our life is largely the result of compounded daily efforts in a particular direction - and if the habits that we have don't align with the direction that God has called us in, we are left feeling unfulfilled and adrift.
So if you know where you should be going, here’s what I’d suggest: take control of your life by cultivating good habits. Make a conscious effort to cut out the habits that are holding you back from reaching your potential, as we were all made for greatness. However, that doesn't mean that we will all achieve everything we aspire to. Greatness requires grit, success requires sacrifice, and sanctity requires you to die to yourself, take up your cross and walk with Christ, getting up from your falls and facing your challenges head on.
As the Lenten season approaches, we are given the opportunity to deny ourselves the comforts of ordinary life in order to grow closer to Christ’s suffering, death and ultimately, His resurrection. It is here that transforming our habits can make all the difference. Set aside some more time throughout your day for prayer. Sanctify your work. Cut out distractions and the mindless scrolling, and spend quality time with family members and friends. Be the joy that is sometimes missing in their lives.

Daniel Londos - CIS Schools Triathlon
Daniel Londos (Year 7) delivered a valiant performance at the CIS/All Schools Triathlon held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. Competing against some of the state’s top young athletes, Daniel showcased his determination and endurance across the demanding swim, bike, and run course.
Beyond the competition, Daniel thoroughly enjoyed the experience, embracing the challenge and the camaraderie of racing alongside other talented athletes. His performance at this prestigious event highlights his passion for the sport and his continued growth as a triathlete.
Well done to Daniel on a fantastic effort!

AICES Basketball Championships
AICES Basketball Championships
Congratulations go to Marcus Alloggia (Year 11) for making the U18s HZSA Basketball team, which competed on Tuesday, 25 February at the AICES Championships. The team had a strong campaign, reaching the semi-finals but falling short in a tough match. Despite the disappointment, they fought hard in the third-place game, narrowly losing by just one point. With limited training and team familiarity, the players demonstrated impressive individual performances and teamwork. Competition was intense, and while squad selection was highly competitive this year, there is strong determination from Marcus to push for next year’s AICES team.
In addition, Mr Nick Georgiou (Head of Sport) was involved in managing the U16s HZSA Basketball team, which competed on Monday. 24 February and secured HZSA’s first AICES Championship in over 15 years. In both the semi-final and final, the team found itself down by one point despite dominating large portions of the game. However, they showcased resilience and determination, winning both matches with thrilling buzzer-beaters. I encourage all Redfield students to keep pushing until the final whistle. Hopefully, we will see more boys selected for the HZSA team in the years to come!

Master of Warrane College
Master of Warrane College
On Wednesday, 19 February, Associate Professor Xavier Symons(Class of 2008) was installed as the Master of Warrane College, one of the residential colleges at the University of NSW. Xavier is the fifth Master since the College opened in 1971.
Xavier has taken on this role in addition to his vital work as the Director of the Plunkett Ethics Centre at the Australian Catholic University.
Redfield has a long association with Warrane because of the connections between Opus Dei and both educational institutions. The fathers of some of the earliest families at Redfield (amongst them, the James, McMahon, Holtom, Cox, Burfittand Perrottetfamilies lived at Warrane when they were studying at the University of NSW.
At the traditional Wednesday-night dinner at Warrane in the presence of the whole student body of Warrane, three former Masters and the Chancellor of UNSW, Mr David Gonski, Xavier was officially made the Master. Xavier's mother Julia and sister Anastasia were also present.
Xavier gave a hard-hitting speech after dinner in a packed Main Common Room. He reminded the young men there of the aims of the College and of the important part of their lives ahead of them at College where they had the possibility of making themselves into valuable members of society who know how to use their freedom with responsibility.
Mr Gonski gave the vote of thanks for Xavier's presentation and spoke in glowing terms of Warrane as part of the UNSW family.
Past students of Redfield, Alexander Kos, Raphael Kim, Dominic Ng, Peter Stoodley, Matthew Furcinitti, Simon O'Neil, Martin Mulkeenand Damian Yu, who are currently studying at UNSW and living at Warrane, were all in attendance.
