Leave Things Better Than You Found Them – ‘Sweep the Sheds’
This term, our Redfield Blitz has focused on the virtues of generosity and service to others with the motto “Leave things better than you found them”.
This motto reminds me of the idea of “sweeping the sheds” shared in James Kerr's book Legacy, which explores the lessons of leadership from the New Zealand All Blacks. Former fly-half Andrew Mehrtens talks about the ritual and importance of sweeping the sheds after a game:
It's an example of personal discipline, it's not expecting somebody else to do your job for you.It teaches you not to expect things to be handed to you. If you have personal discipline in your life, then you are going to be more disciplined on the field.
In Legacy, Kerr describes the scene in the dressing room after a resounding 42-7 win over Wales:
Something happens that you might not expect. Two of the senior players - one an international player of the year, twice - each pick up a long-handled broom and begin to sweep the sheds. They brush the gauze into small piles in the corner.
Lock Sam Whitelock has explained: “Leaving the changerooms or training ground the way you found it - or in a better state - is a part of every team I’ve been involved with.”
This is a virtue we should continue to encourage amongst our sons, not just at school but in life beyond the Redfield gates.
Year 9Stand Tall Conference
To further assist our Redfield men with their character development and wellbeing skills, Year 9 will attend the Stand TallConference in Sydney on Thursday, 6 June (Week 6).
Stand Tall(which is now in its twelfth year) brings a host of high-quality speakers together on the one day with the aim of growing students’ resilience, strength and motivation and developing the power of perspective to make positive life choices. Speakers include:
- Michael Crossland, an extraordinary young man who has defied the odds of a life-threatening cancer to build a life of exceptional achievements.
- Nedd Brockmannwho embarked a run of nearly 4,000km that took 46 days to raise money for the homeless charity Mobilise. By the end of his run, he had raised $2.5 million.
- Jack Berneswho, at age 9, started an initiative called fiver for a farmerto support drought-affected farmers. Jack has changed the lives of thousands, having since raised over $2 million.
This promises to be a great event event that will benefit our Year 9 students tremendously.
More information about Stand Tall 2024and key speakers presenting can be found online at https://www.standtallevent.com/stand-tall-sydney-2024.
Thank you to those parents who have already completed their son’s permission form for the Stand TallConference. This is most appreciated. With a little over a week to go to this event, I ask those parents who still need to complete their son’s permission form to do this as soon as possible by completing the form previously emailed to you.
Years 10 to 12Community Service Opportunities
As we are reminded in Matthew 25:40, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”.
I am delighted to announce two new community service initiatives open to our senior students at Redfield, both of which will provide our students with the opportunity to be involved in real service by assisting the homeless and less fortunate within our wider community.
- Vinnies Van
Redfield had been invited to participate in the West Ryde Vinnies Van service on Friday evenings once a month. The Vinnies Van service provides food, drink and friendship to people on the streets in a way which respects the dignity of every person who makes use of the service.
Initially, this opportunity will be offered to Years 11 and 12 students; however, we will be looking to expand this to Year 10 students over 16 years old. Further details will be shared with Years 11 and 12 students at their next Stage 6 Assembly, and information detailing dates, expectations and requirements will be emailed to Years 11 and 12 parents next week. - Year 11 Tangara-Redfield Joint Community Service Project – Saturday, June 22
I am also excited to announce a pilot community service project in partnership with our sister school Tangara. Together, we will be working in partnership with The Movement, which is a grassroots organisation that assists the homeless by providing home-cooked meals, toiletries, food and clothing.
Five Year 11 students from each school will work together to develop a meal plan, cook and distribute food to those in need in the city on Saturday, 22 June (Week 8). I will be talking to Year 11 at the next Stage 6 Assembly about this community service project and to ask for expressions of interest. Unfortunately, we are only able to accommodate five students from Redfield for this initial day; our hope moving forward is that we are able to expand this community service initiative on an ongoing basis so as to be able to accommodate more of our Year 11 students in the future.
More information on The Movementcan be found at https://www.facebook.com/themovementoutreachglobal/.
I look forward to many of our students reaching out to make a positive impact on our society.

Year 5 Social Justice Boys Host Successful Book Swap
Year 5 Social Justice Boys Host Successful Book Swap
I am thrilled to share the success of our recent Book Swap, organised and run by our enthusiastic Year 5 Social Justice boys. This wonderful event saw the Primary students bringing in their old books and swapping them for new and exciting reads, fostering a love for reading and a sense of community.
The Book Swap provided an excellent opportunity for our boys to explore different genres, discover new authors and share their favourite stories with friends. By exchanging books, students not only refreshed their personal libraries, but also learned the value of giving and receiving. A remarkable outcome of the Book Swap was the funds raised for the Indigenous Reading Society in Australia. Through their efforts, the Year 5 boys raised over $100, which will go towards supporting literacy programs for indigenous children. The Indigenous Reading Society works tirelessly to ensure that every child has access to books and reading materials, helping to bridge the literacy gap and promote educational equity.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 boys for their dedication and hard work in organising this event. Their initiative and community spirit have made a positive impact, and we look forward to hosting another Book Swap next term.
Thank you to all the students, parents and teachers who supported this event. Your contributions and enthusiasm have made it a memorable and meaningful experience for everyone involved. Let's continue to inspire a love for reading and support important causes within our community.

Year 2 Celebrates Mother's Day with Handmade Puppets
Year 2 Celebrates Mother's Day with Handmade Puppets
In honour of Mother's Day, our creative Year 2 boys took on a project to show their love and appreciation for their mothers. The students spent the week crafting beautiful puppets, each one uniquely designed to resemble their beloved mums. With colourful materials and plenty of imagination, the boys carefully put together their puppet creations. They paid special attention to details, adding features that reminded them of their mothers' smiles, hair and favourite outfits. The excitement and joy in the classroom were palpable as each boy proudly presented his puppet, sharing stories and laughter with classmates.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 2 boys for their hard work and the beautiful puppets they created. This heartfelt activity not only allowed the boys to express their creativity, but also helped them reflect on the special qualities they admire in their mothers. The finished puppets were more than just art projects; they were tokens of love and appreciation, ready to be presented as cherished Mother's Day gifts. We hope these handmade treasures brought smiles and joy to their mothers on this special day.

Mother's Day Stall
Mother's Day Stall
We are delighted to share the wonderful success of our recent Mother's Day Stall, and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this special event. First and foremost, a big thank you goes to the four incredible mothers who dedicated their time and effort to help run the stall: Mrs Sahyoun, Mrs Chiha, Mrs Londos and Mrs Twyford. Your enthusiasm and hard work ensured that everything ran smoothly and that each student found the perfect gift for his mother and grandmother. We are so grateful for your support and commitment.
We would also like to express our gratitude to the Year 6 students who volunteered their time to assist with the stall and the raffle. Your help was invaluable, and your positive attitude made the event even more enjoyable for everyone involved. Congratulations to our prize winners listed below.
PRIZE WINNERS
A special thank you goes to all the parents who generously donated gifts for the raffle. Your contributions made the raffle a highlight of the event and helped raise additional funds for our school programs. The success of the Mother's Day Stall is a true testament to the wonderful spirit of our Redfield College community.
We hope that our mothers loved their gifts and cherish the thought that went into buying their presents. Our next stall will be the Father’s Day Stall in early September.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

Captain's Corner
Captain's Corner
Hello, there. My name is Andrew Gaitau, the Sirius House Captain. It is an honour to write this week's Captains Corner article.
I’m sure most students have settled into Term 2 by now and, with the upcoming Mid-Year Exams, I want to share some thoughts about using our freedom to make the right choices.
A quote which I like and which helps define freedom comes from a man named Matthew Kelly, who says that “freedom is not the ability to do whatever you want. Freedom is the strength of character to do what is good, true, noble and right”.
There will be times when we will need to make a choice about what to do in our free time, such as study, go out, play sports, hang out with friends or spend time with family. Each choice we make will end up shaping us, no matter the size of the decision. We sometimes need to make the conscious choice to focus our energies on what we are called to do today - in this case, prepare ourselves for upcoming assessments and exams. During the past few years, I have preferred reading books to revising and studying for my subjects, which I think is understandable because it has broadened my view of the world, helped me to see things differently and helped me grow closer to God. However, I have come to understand that I need to set my personal preferences (even if they are good things like reading) to one side when there is an important task at hand (like exams). Students should try to build a fundamental base of discipline when it comes to study because there will be times when we don’t feel like it. I certainly find it easier to make the choice to get on with the work when I have a clear understanding of why I am doing it.
Of course, we need a good support network to help us make the right choices. None of my successes would be possible without my parents, who are my guides when it comes to making wise choices. So, students, go and thank your parents or brothers or friends or whoever it is who helps you make the right choice.
I wish you all the best with using your freedom to make the right choices in your future endeavours, and God bless.

PARED Leadership Day
PARED Leadership Day
On Wednesday, 15 May, I was lucky enough to be part of the inaugural PARED Leadership Day, where student leaders got to meet with our brother and sister schools Wollemi and Montgrove College to exchange ideas for school initiatives and activities. Old Boys from both Redfield and Wollemi gave their time to speak to us about what it means to be a leader and shared some personal anecdotes from their time at school. Redfield Old Boy Sebastian Burfitt(Class of 2009) talked about living up to the responsibility of being a leader. He also discussed the three essential leadership traits of authenticity, service and sacrifice, as opposed to conventional definitions of leadership. The 2018 Wollemi Captains explained the importance of bringing the entire grade together and told us the story of how they managed to convince their teachers to bring back custom writing on their Year 12 jerseys (something our Class of 2025 could learn from). We shared ideas of fun games to play at assembly and put forward ideas for changes that we would like to see at our school. Towards the end of the day, each of the five tables had a chance to present their ideas to the other schools. Issues like House spirit, sports resources, work burnout and social skills all came up, and we heard ideas from PARED discos to post-exam retreats. A fan-favourite was the exceptionally charismatic Raphael Aldous(Year 8 at Wollemi), who spoke very convincingly about the Catholic ethos of our schools. Overall, it was a great day where we all learned valuable lessons about leadership and got the chance to get to know our fellow PARED schools.

Secondary Pilgrimage Day
Secondary Pilgrimage Day
During the month of May, it is a long-held tradition at Redfield for boys to visit a shrine of Our Lady to pray the Rosary for the many intentions of our school community. This year we certainly broke with tradition and made it an almost full day affair.
On Monday, 20 May, Years 7 to 12 had an extensive Pilgrimage Day that included multiple activities. The morning lessons were as normal, followed by an early Mass at 10:10am and a quick recess in order to board buses and set out to four different shrines. It was also the first Pilgrimage where boys were vertically grouped according to their House, and the Year 12s showed admirable leadership to lead the Rosary for each House. A special intention was the operation for James Righetti(Year 6) the following day which, thankfully, was a success.
Upon returning to the College, the boys were treated to a barbecue lunch cooked by the staff, followed by an afternoon of sport. Each year group played the following sports:
- Year 7 - frisbee
- Year 8 - football
- Year 9 - basketball
- Year 10 - volleyball
- Years 11 and 12 - touch footy
The weather was fantastic and the fields were finally dry enough to play on!
I would like to thank all the Secondary staff for their dedication to making the Pilgrimage Day memorable for the boys.
Chris Tanna, Head of Religion

Redfield Primary Shines at HZSA Cross Country
On Tuesday, 21 May, Redfield College participated in the HZSA Cross Country carnival held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Our school was represented by 24 enthusiastic boys at the event. Among them were the 8 and 9-year-olds who, along with the 10-year-olds, ran 2 kilometres, and the 11 years and 12+ age groups tackled a 3-kilometre course.
I am proud to say that our boys ran fantastically well and showed great determination. They all should be proud of their achievement and are to be congratulated. There were many outstanding performances, but the following boys who will represent Redfield at the CIS Cross Country event on Thursday, 6 June deserve special mention:

NorthWest Basketball Challenge
NorthWest Basketball Challenge
I am pleased to share the fantastic news of Redfield's outstanding performance at the 2024 Northwest Schools Competition held on Wednesday, 22 May at the Hills Hornets Basketball Stadium. It was a day filled with spirited competition, teamwork and memorable moments.
Redfield fielded two teams for the event: a junior team consisting of students from Years 3 and 4, and a senior team composed of students from Years 5 and 6. Competing against schools from across the region, our boys showcased their talents on the Basketball court with enthusiasm and commitment.
I am proud to say that both of Redfield's teams performed exceptionally well.
The senior team made it to the final and played Samuel Gilbert Public School, which was a very tall and tough team. Having previously met them in the round games and only winning by three points, we knew that it would be challenging, but our Redfield boys outjumped and out-enthused our opposition and won the game by four points. It was a wonderful team effort, with all the boys contributing to our success.
Our junior team similarly had a great day of Basketball. They also made it to the final and played a fast and skilful team in Baulkham Hills North Public School. It was a nerve-wracking game, with the boys constantly clawing their way back into the contest. In the end, it was not to be, and they went down valiantly by one point and finished as runners-up.
All 18 boys can hold their heads up high for the manner in which they played and proudly represented Redfield.
I would like to extend special thanks to all the parents who generously offered their assistance with transportation and took the time to cheer our teams on.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr Zhang, whose coaching expertise and guidance were instrumental in preparing our teams for the competition. Additionally, a big thank you goes to Mrs Parkerfor her invaluable assistance with the all-important bench duties.
