I have spent a few days last week with Year 6 in our nation's capital. Although it was a little cold, the weather has been fantastic. Not only has the weather been fantastic, but our Year 6 class has truly represented the College admirably. We all attended Mass on Friday morning for the Feast of the Assumption. Several members of the public stopped me as I was leaving to comment about how lovely it was to see our school bringing our students to Mass on this wonderful feast and how beautifully behaved and respectful our Year 6 men were. We may not have been with the rest of the school celebrating this Feast, but you were all in our minds and hearts, especially the Year 12s, who are nearing the completion of their trial exams.
Thanks to Mr Ben Nolan, Mr Darren Corke, Mr David Vassalloand Mr Nipun Dayasenafor giving up their time to make this trip as great as it has been. There is nothing like being in our Nation’s Capital to inspire us and give much thanks for our wonderful country and the privileges that we have. On this beautiful feast of Our Blessed Mother, let's give much thanks to God for the many gifts that we have received.
Our students’ recent NAPLAN results reflect the strong academic culture we continue to build at Redfield. We are proud of their efforts and growth across all year levels. We are currently in the process of reviewing the results in detail, and early indications point to very positive outcomes. You can view a summary of the results in this infographic.
Respect is the due regard for others’ feelings, wishes, or rights. Respect is a focus point for us this term and it relates to the virtue of Justice. I have spoken with our secondary school about respect and how in Redfield as we build a culture of excellence. Respect thrives in places like this—places that foster virtue and form Christian men of character. Behaviours that demonstrate justice include using respectful language at all times, wearing our uniform properly, caring for all property (our own, others’, and the school’s) and helping others with our words and actions. Treating our peers, our staff and ourselves with respect is an essential part of the virtue of justice, an essential part of being a Redfield Man.
Also for your diary, I am hoping to see many parents at our term 3 KPF with Dr Judith Locke, bestselling author of The Bonsai Child and The Bonsai Student. We are having two sessions: one for Secondary parents on Wednesday, 20 August at Tangara, and one for Primary parents on Thursday, 21 August at Redfield. On Friday, 5 September, we will host our traditional Father’s Day Breakfast at school, and hope to see many of our dads there. More information and order forms will be sent out soon.

Public Speaking Workshops
Public Speaking Workshops

Students in Year 6are invited to participate in a Public Speaking program in Term 3.
The five-week program, led by award-winning speaker and trainer Dale Rees-Bevan, will run on Thursday afternoons from 3:15pm to 4:45pm, starting 28 August and concluding 25 September.
By introducing speakers, delivering prepared speeches, offering peer feedback, and practising impromptu presentations, students will learn specific techniques to command an audience’s attention, address groups with confidence, and present themselves as leaders in an appropriate manner.
The program costs $99, and there is a limit of 20 participants.
If your son is interested in participating, please complete this expression of interest form by Tuesday, 19 August. Students and their parents will be contacted by the end of next week to confirm placement in the program.
Entry into Medicine Seminar
On Monday 25 August, we’ll be holding a lunchtime seminar for students in Years 6–12 who are interested in studying medicine after school.
The seminar will be presented by Michael Choi, a Redfield Old Boy who is studying medicine. Michael wants to share his journey into medicine and offer practical advice on how students can begin preparing now. It will run from 12:50–1:30pm in the MPA.
This is a great opportunity for students to hear firsthand what a career in medicine involves. Please see the flyer below under "College Events" for more details.

City 2 Surf - Team Redfield
City 2 Surf - Team Redfield
On Sunday, 10 August, as grey skies loomed overhead, Team Redfield embarked on the City2Surf running from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach. A 14-kilometre journey, much of which was spent in pounding rain.
I am incredibly proud to say we have raised (as of writing this on 13/08) over $7,000 for Running for Premature Babies! An incredible amount considering it is our first year, and something for us as a community to be very proud of. Some top contributors include Soizicand Paul Morrissey, who raised over $2,300, David Kwon(Year 5) for raising over $1,000 and Ellie Ngfor raising over $600!
Below is a quote from William Fox(Year 2), who finished in 1hr 49min and raised over $500.
"When I started the City 2 Surf it was not too bad, but when I passed the 2km sign I felt exhausted and so hot. I felt even more exhausted when I started going up a really high hill (Heartbreak Hill). I thought about the babies and I kept going, especially for my two baby brothers in heaven. I felt so relieved when I passed the finish line."
Our donation page will remain open for the next few weeks, and the link can be found here: https://city2surf25.grassrootz.com/running-for-premature-babies/redfield-college?tab=leaderboard
Big congratulations to all who participated and especially those who raised money or donated!""

Buddy Jilwanhas just joined our ever growing Mentoring team at Redfield. Buddy and his wife have had three boys graduate from Redfield (Anthony, Christian and Jonathan). He has an extensive background in a number of entrepreneurial careers including counselling, property development and environmental sustainability technologies. He is most grateful for the formation that his family has received from the Pared Schools and was quite passionate about the prospect of becoming a Mentor. Buddy is famous for hosting the Dads and Sons breakfasts this year and there are plenty more in the pipeline. He finds great satisfaction in serving Lebanese coffee and good food to others as a way to bring people together and foster friendships. We welcome Buddy to the Redfield community and trust he will be a fine Mentor!

On for Young and Old
On for Young and Old
In recent weeks, the Church celebrated successively the Jubilee of Youth and World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. Around 1 million young people gathered for the former event in Rome. But I was particularly struck by some words of Pope Leo for the latter event:
Every parish, association and ecclesial group is called to become a protagonist in a “revolution” of gratitude and care, to be brought about by regular visits to the elderly, the creation of networks of support and prayer for them and with them, and the forging of relationships that can restore hope and dignity to those who feel forgotten. Christian hope always urges us to be more daring, to think big, to be dissatisfied with things the way they are. In this case, it urges us to work for a change that can restore the esteem and affection to which the elderly are entitled.
Being dissatisfied with the way things are does not mean complaining or being a perfectionist. It means that Christian hope ought to push us to constantly improve ourselves and the world around us. Perhaps we can consider how we respond to Pope Leo's call for a "revolution of care."

Celebrating the Joy of Cultural Exchange
Celebrating the Joy of Cultural Exchange
At Redfield College, we’re fortunate to be experiencing the magic of cultural exchange firsthand! This term, we’ve been honoured to welcome two wonderful visiting schools — Monte VIfrom Uruguay and Seido Mikawadeifrom Nagasaki, Japan. These schools have been coming to Redfield College for several years and we always look forward to their annual visit.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our incredible host families, who have opened their homes and hearts to our guests. You’ve been more than hosts — you’ve been ambassadors for Redfield and Australia, sharing our way of life with warmth and generosity. The feedback from our visiting students has been glowing, with stories of laughter-filled dinners, weekend adventures, and unforgettable moments together. Many of the local families have even introduced the boys to local foods like Vegemite and TimTams - with mixed results.
It’s not only our guests who have gained from this experience — our families have enjoyed a rich cultural exchange too, learning about new traditions, cuisines and ways of seeing the world. It has been very rewarding to see the true friendships develop between the visiting students and our Redfield boys. Many have formed lasting bonds that will continue long after the return flights have departed. In fact, we’ve already heard whispers that some families are eager to volunteer again next year to share in this special experience.
The exchange doesn’t end here — in just a few weeks, six of our Redfield boys will be travelling to Nagasaki to represent our school and immerse themselves in Japanese culture. We can’t wait to hear their stories and see the friendships they will form across the seas.

Year 5 Swimming Program
Year 5 Swimming Program
Learning to swim is an essential life skill that every child should have the opportunity to develop. In week 3 we began our Primary Swimming Program. At Coulter Swimming, there were 6 different groups each with a different coloured cap: purple, gold, pink, red, blue and silver.
Each person was assigned to learn new skills or skills that they could improve. For example, in the silver group we learnt: 100m Freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m breaststroke with correct timing, introduction to butterfly arms, 25m butterfly kick and tumble turns.
For survival activities we learned: tread water for two minutes, 25m back scull, perform a reach and throw rescue. Water safety is an important part of a swim program! You use demonstration practice with water safety skills with and without goggles.
It was a great program and all of the Primary boys enjoyed the experience!

Philosophy Day
Philosophy Day
On Wednesday, 6th August, 16 students from Year 11 attended a Philosophy Day for Thinkers at Ascham School. It was a day to step back and consider again how much philosophy is at the basis of much of our knowledge.
Topics included The Rules of Logic which explored the classic arguments for the existence of God formulated by Aristotle and refined by St Thomas Aquinas, and the Ontological argument of St Anselm. Another session delved into the importance of Plato's thinking, especially his celebrated Allegory of the Cave and analogy of the Charioteer. We were also guided through an analysis of courage and the difference between it and acts of bravery that may be motivated by emotion, panic or springing from an ignoble purpose. Dr Andrew Pinsent, Professor of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford came to us live via a zoom call from the UK and walked us through the links between science, evil, Religion and free will. The presenter, zoomed in to be with us at 1:30am UK time.
Two Redfield students, Chris Fernandezand Jackson Buschmade valuable contributions to the debate at the end of the day, on what makes the world go around, love or money? The lecturer for the day, Julie Arliss, was full of praise for their acute observations.

Bstreetsmart Year 10 Excursion
Bstreetsmart Year 10 Excursion
On Tuesday, 5 our Year 10 students attended the bstreetsmart road safety program at Qudos Bank Arena. The event, run by NSW road safety and emergency services professionals, aimed to give students a realistic insight into the consequences of risky behaviour on the road.
Students described the experience as 'confronting but incredibly valuable'. Through live crash re-enactments, personal testimonies from survivors, and presentations from police, paramedics, and medical specialists, they gained an understanding of how one poor decision can change lives forever.
Many students commented that the day gave them a new perspective on risk-taking behaviours—especially those related to driving, peer influence, and decision-making in high-pressure situations. As they look toward gaining their learner and provisional licences in the coming years, this learning experience has helped them recognise the importance of making safe and responsible choices on the road.
We commend our Year 10 students for their maturity and engagement throughout the day.
Mrs Natasha Doherty, Mr Chehade Richa, and Mr Colin Lai
