The term is starting to wind up now with a frenetic pace. Take a breath and get ready for the last four weeks. Blink and it will be Christmas already!
This was a topic of a few words that I had for our students at our Whole-School Assembly in Week 3. I recently attended the funeral of Jamie Dowsett, a father of four young boys who attend Wollemi and Montgrove College, our brother and sister schools in western Sydney. Jamie was a great family man, husband and father, a man who loved his faith and took that into everything he did. Jamie was only 35 when he died. As I sat and listened to the beautiful words that his strong and faithful wife expressed, it made me realise that we never really know the day nor the hour when we, too, shall pass. We can tend to be always waiting for something, waiting for the next holiday, a pay rise, the weekend, a new job, a new house and the list goes on. But we should be reminded that we need to seize the day: why leave something for tomorrow when we could do it today?
St Josemaria in The Forge163 says: "You shouldn’t be so easy on yourself! Don’t wait until the New Year to make your resolutions. Every day is a good day to make good decisions.Hodie, nunc!— Today, now!"
One thing that we can put into practice today that Jamie lived at home was the idea of modelling love for Mum.
Especially for boys, they must see their father prioritising their mother, taking time to talk to her, doing small things for her without fanfare, and speaking to her with kindness and respect. A father's example sets the standard for how they will treat others in the future.
Thank you to all the mums who attended the special Mass and Morning Tea to celebrate Mother’s Day. We had record numbers in attendance, and it gave the boys a wonderful opportunity to pray with their mums and also for us as a school to thank them for everything they do.
We have the most beautiful event in the school calendar in a few weeks' time. We will be holding our annual Eucharistic Procession on Friday, 11 Junecommencing at 11:30am. A good number of parish priests and seminarians will be joining us. The day will honour Our Lord very much. Please pencil the occasion into your diary.
Recently, I attended the funeral of John Faehrmann, who passed away on 27 April. John was part of the original group of parents who first started PARED and served as the founding Chairman of PARED's Board. With more than 30 years of experience as a teacher and headmaster, John provided invaluable support and guidance to countless families, teachers and school leaders. May he rest in peace.
We were deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of former College Librarian Charles Galealast week. Charles was a long-serving staff member who will be remembered fondly by many Old Boys. His funeral will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, 4 June at St Michael's Church, Baulkham Hills. We extend our condolences and prayers to his family and dear ones.
Finally, it was a great privilege to help Mr David Vassalloat the Vinnies Van community service initiative last Friday. If you haven’t viewed the live stories that we had on the night, make sure to follow us on Instagram and see what it is all about. It was a great night. If you have not signed up for a Vinnies Van with Mr Vassallo, you are missing out.

Year 9 Stand Tall Conference
To further assist our Redfield men with their character development and wellbeing skills, Year 9 will attend the Stand TallConference in Sydney on Thursday, 12 June (Week 7).
Stand Tall(which is now in its thirteenth year) brings a host of high-quality speakers together on the one day with the aim of growing students’ resilience, strength and motivation and developing the power of perspective to make positive life choices. Speakers include:
- Matt Purcell, the founder of Social Kung Fu, Australia’s only verbal self-defence program. Matt is a TEDx speaker, the winner of Sydney’s Young Entrepreneur Award for Media and a regular media voice on mental health. Now being an evidence-based program, Matt’s mission is to empower one million young Australians to become bully-proof through Social Kung Fu.

Change of Dates for Term 3, 2025
Change of Dates for Term 3, 2025
We wish to inform you of an adjustment to the College calendar for Term 3. The start date for Term 3 has been brought forward by one day. Instead of commencing on Wednesday, 23 July, classes will now begin on Tuesday, 22 July.
Connected to this change, Friday, 8 August will now serve as a Parent-Teacher Interview Day for students in Years 7 to 10. As such, students in Years 2 to 11 will not be required to attend school on this day. Please note that Trial HSC Exams will continue as planned on this day, and Year 12 students are to attend school as per their published timetable.
We appreciate your understanding and support with these changes, and we look forward to the benefits of holding our interviews slightly earlier in the term. Further information about booking interviews with your son’s teachers will be shared closer to the date.

Term 2 KPF
Term 2 KPF
On Monday, 19 May, various Redfield parents hosted the Term 2 KPF in their homes. This is very generous of those families, providing an important opportunity for parents to catch up over supper and connect. The night included year-specific topics that parents found useful. A wise parent once said that if you can develop one strategy for your parenting after each KPF, then you are travelling well! We are blessed to have a community of parents who are motivated to attend KPFs, though the inclement weather did put those good intentions to the test!
I would also like to thank the presenters who carefully prepared the topics and delivered their material as an interactive workshop rather than just a one-way flow of information. Parents seem to enjoy the discussions and the ability to test ideas and propose strategies to the many challenges we face as in raising our boys.
The feedback from this KPF has been very positive, including the Years 3 to 6 talk about love workshops. Thank you to the Class Parents who helped promote the night and assisted with lining up the host family locations.

Flowers for Our Lady of the Lake
Flowers for Our Lady of the Lake
Throughout the month of May, our Primary students and teachers have been joyfully offering flowers to Our Lady of the Lake at Redfield.
Each week, students have had the opportunity to bring flowers and say a short prayer before attending Mass.
It’s a beautiful tradition, and I’m sure Our Lady is very happy with the love and effort shown. Surrounded by so many beautiful flowers, she has looked truly radiant throughout the month.
Huge thanks go to all the boys and their families who have contributed to this beautiful offering!

Mother's Day Mass and Morning Tea
Mother's Day Mass and Morning Tea
On Monday, 12 May, over 120 Redfield mothers enjoyed attending Mass with their sons, followed by a special morning tea in the Atrium. The Chapel was at capacity, and it was great to see so many mothers catching up afterwards. I would like to thank the Parent Committee for hosting a wonderful morning tea that everyone enjoyed, including the staff! We certainly have generous parents in our Redfield community who cherish opportunities to bring people together and foster friendships.

Northwest Schools Basketball Challenge 2025
I am very pleased to share that our Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 Basketball teams were crowned Grand Final winners at the Northwest Schools Challenge 2025 held on Wednesday, 21 May at Hills Hornets. This is an outstanding achievement!
The boys displayed exceptional teamwork, courage and determination, overcoming many strong and very tall opponents on their path to victory. Their effort and sportsmanship were truly commendable.
A big thank you goes to our dedicated coaches, Mr Danny Zhang (Years 3/4 team) and Mr Corey Rawlings (Years 5/6 team), for their leadership and support throughout the tournament. A special thank you also goes to our very own "Mrs Basketball", Mrs Kathleen Parker, who expertly managed the bench and scoring with great care and attention.

Year 4 Maritime Museum Excursion
Year 4 Maritime Museum Excursion

On Friday, 16 May, Year 4 visited the Maritime Museum. There were many fascinating exhibitions, including the real HMASVampire warship, the HMASOnslow submarine and a life-sized replica of Captain James Cook’s ship, theEndeavour. All of these incredible ships were docked on the water.
We then split into three groups to explore the ships and the museum. We boarded the HMAS Vampire and viewed a variety of smaller artefacts. My personal favourite was theEndeavour, where we stepped on board and explored the musty old dining rooms. We even got to see Captain Cook’s office, bedroom and living quarters.
In conclusion, the Maritime Museum is a breathtaking place with spectacular exhibitions, and I would highly recommend a visit.
Nathan Lee, Year 4
How would you feel about visiting the Maritime Museum with all of your friends? That’s exactly what happened to me on Friday, 16 May. We went to the replica of theEndeavour and explored the exhibition. It was a wonderful learning opportunity for me and my classmates, who were all fortunate enough to experience this exciting event.
The first part of our excursion was a tour of the replica of theEndeavour. This famous ship sailed around the world twice and helped map the east coast of Australia. Our guide took us from the bow to the stern, showing us the different parts of the ship. We explored the lower deck where the crew and sailors lived. We saw the gentlemen’s quarters, as well as the rooms of the doctor, two artists and an astronomer. Most of them slept in hammocks, except for a wealthy man named Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook. The ship’s voyage had several goals: to discover new plants and animals (fauna and flora), to measure the distance from the Earth to the Sun and to claim new land for Britain.
The second part of the excursion took us inside the museum to explore the exhibition. We saw models of planes and ships, watched interesting videos and completed an activity book as we went around. Afterward, we had lunch together outside.
In conclusion, it was a fun and educational experience with my classmates. That’s why I think you should visit the Maritime Museum too!
David Sung, Year 4

Captain's Corner
Captain's Corner
With the term well underway and deadlines mounting, it’s natural to feel like our worth is measured merely by our academic performance. However, the truth of our faith calls us to something more profound. We are not defined by our results, but rather by our relationship with God—the peace that stills our worries.
And this faith never shouts for attention. It is quiet and intentional, shaping us slowly to be the best versions of ourselves. It’s in the small things: the silent decision to keep going, the gentle choice to be kind, the unseen moments of honesty when no one is watching. These are the instances where faith breathes life into our ordinary days, making them extraordinary.
When our tasks feel overwhelming, we often hear the phrase, “just keep going.” But growing in our faith opens our eyes to why we persevere. Our work becomes more than a duty; it becomes a response to God’s call to live with purpose, love and trust, which is a form of sacrifice. And when we feel like we’re not enough or like we’re falling short, we can rest in this promise: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Ultimately, let your study be steady. Let your heart remain rooted in truth. And stay open to what God is doing, even if it feels hidden at times, because the most important work happening in you isn’t on paper; it’s in your soul.

Renaissance Reading's Accelerated Reader Program
Renaissance Reading's Accelerated Reader Program
Since the beginning of this term, our students from Years 2 to 10 have been participating in Renaissance Reading’s Accelerated Readerprogram, which has involved regular reading during school hours. For Primary students, the beginning of each English lesson is reserved for this purpose, whereas for Secondary students, Renaissance Readingtakes place from 12:30pm to 12:50pm each day. As part of the reading program, students are encouraged to read books at a level that falls within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). We encourage students to engage with books that reflect their personal interests, but also to be adventurous and occasionally explore titles outside their comfort zone.
The College Library has been organised to support students in selecting suitable books. The vast majority of fiction titles now includes information relevant to the Renaissance Reading Accelerated Readerprogram. For example, books display details such as reading level, clearly marked with the ‘AR’ logo.
Students are also able to use the Accelerated Reader Searchfunction on our Library’s online database to find books within their ZPD. Additional filters (such as interest level and book topic) can be used to help narrow their search and personalise results.
The screenshots below demonstrate how to use these key functions within the Library database, which all students can access via the Student Portal by clicking the ‘Oliver’ icon.
We hope students make the most of this excellent program to strengthen their literacy levels; it is an investment that will undoubtedly have a positive impact on their learning and academic achievement.
Jakov Pavlovic, Renaissance Reading Program Coordinator
