On Monday, 14 August, we farewelled the visiting exchange group from Colegio Monte VI, our brother school in Montevideo, Uruguay. The eight students accompanied by their teacher Alfonso Musto had a wonderful time during their five-week stay, thanks largely to the warm hospitality of their host families. The Uruguayans were presented with a certificate to recognise their participation in the sixteenth exchange trip between our two schools.

Departing with the Uruguayans were five of our Year 9 students (Marcus Alloggia, Xavier Asalemo, Noah Fell, Christopher Fernandezand Joachim Rodrigues) accompanied by teacher Peter Harb. The boys have been kept busy with a range of school-based activities at Monte VI, cultural outings and time with their host families. One highlight so far was a visit to La Aguada Church in Montevideo on Wednesday this week, where the boys participated in community service by serving a meal to the homeless and elderly from the local area.

Below are some observations from the students about different aspects of life in Uruguay:

On Friday, 18 August, the visiting exchange group of 12 students and three teachers from our brother school Seido Mikawadai in Nagasaki, Japan, departed after a whirlwind 12-day stay with us at Redfield.

The Headmaster presented the participants with a certificate and a Redfield tie in a special assembly, bringing to a close their cultural immersion program for 2023.

Without the generosity of these members of the Redfield community, the program simply would not be possible - dōmo arigatōgozaimasu!

This week, Secondary students reflected on the power of saying 'sorry' in our relationship with both  God and others. Our starting point was Jesus' parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14). Following on from our consideration of gratitude a few weeks ago, we saw that apologising is not just a question of good manners. Rather, it is a fundamental attitude that we need to foster in order to heal and strengthen our relationships. In the talk, we discussed the three parts of apologising: realisation (what do I need to say sorry for?), expression (how will I say it?) and resolution (what will I change as a result?).

Next week, Fr Frank and I will be away from Tuesday to Friday. The monthly First Friday adoration will be postponed to the second Friday of the month (8 September). This coincides with the Our Lady's birthday and with our Father's Day breakfast. Dads, feel free to drop in to the Chapel after breakfast - it could be a good opportunity to spend some time in prayer, and confessions will be available.

The Primary teachers are excited to share with you the remarkable experience our boys had during a recent author's visit by the renowned Australian author, Andrew Daddo. With a magical blend of humour and motivation, the visit left a lasting impact on both students and staff alike as Andrew entertained us while delivering some wonderful messages about reading and writing.

Mr Daddo's visit to our school proved to be an extraordinary event that brought joy and inspiration to our students. His engaging presentation style, infused with humour and relatable, cheeky stories, captivated the audience from the moment he stepped onto the stage. The boys were thoroughly entertained by his stories and charismatic delivery. During the interactive session, he shared insights into his writing journey and the creative process behind his books. He emphasised the importance of imagination, perseverance and the value of telling one's unique stories. His words resonated deeply with our students, encouraging them to explore their own creativity and potential. He suggested to our boys that they keep their stories simple and write about subjects they know well.

Important Message for Year 12 Parents

In support of a recent communication to Year 12 parents, it is vital that Year 12 students and parents understand the most important requirement of this post Trial-HSC period: being present. 

Being present matters in every aspect of College life at this time of year:

• to fine-tune knowledge and skills to best prepare for the HSC Exams.
• to share formative moments in the final weeks of Year 12.
• to show the character of a man who, when the going gets tough, keeps working hard.

The Year 12 teachers are using their expertise to best support your sons, but this cannot happen if your son is not present every day, in every class, on time.

Senior Study Club

Following on from the above message, the Senior Study Club will be available for students in Years 10 to 12 on Monday afternoon. Specific workshops for Years 11 and 12 will be provided, covering English Standard and English Advanced, Business Studies and Modern History.

We’ve reached the halfway mark of Term 3, and for Years 11 and 12, the end nears. Year 11 students have their Yearly Exams in three weeks, and the Year 12s graduate in four weeks, so as we seniors finish, it is crucial that we carry, encourage and assist each other through to the finish line. This is the last lap; we have one last sprint. Again, we can consider the Latin motto “a brother helped by another brother is as strong as a walled city” and work as a team through to the end.

As for the entire College, it is vital that we continue striking the right balance of physical activity, studies, socialising with friends and family and faith. I encourage you all to reflect on your own balance with the help of your mentors and parents.

Redfield's spirit of cooperation and friendship was on display in the D&T Workshop during the visit of Seido Mikawadai students from Nagasaki.

Students involved in the Year 10 D&T class were able to work on a 'penny' skateboard using a lamination process with pressed plywood. Under close supervision, they were even able to experience using machinery such as jigsaws, band saws, hand drills and the laser cutter.

Students visiting the Year 9 class received strong support from their peers to design and produce small laminated cutting boards and finish them just in time before their flight back home.

This was a positive and enriching intercultural experience for all involved, particularly considering that wood tech and D&T are not curricular options currently available to the visiting students from Japan.

Last weekend, Year 5 student Henry Lin attended the Hawkesbury City Eisteddfod and achieved some outstanding results:

• 1st place in the Under 11 Pianoforte Competition with a score of 94/100
• 2nd place in the Under 11 String & Brass Instrumental Competition with a score of 92/100
• 2nd place in the Under 13 Championship Pianoforte Competition with a score of 92/100.

We congratulate Henry on his truly impressive performance, which is testament to his hard work, resilience and determination over the last months.

He has made us all very proud and we can’t wait to see him perform at Redfield in the near future.

Students who are performing are in the Year 5 Band, Concert Band, Wind Symphony, Junior Voices, Primary Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Schola.

On Tuesday, 22 August, we had a Live at Lunch concert in the Atrium.

The students performing were Jackson Busch (Year 9), Francisco Chocron (Year 3), Christopher Gebrayel (Year 10), Joshua Haryanto (Year 5), Henry Lin (Year 5), Yushin Oh (Year 6) and Alexander Siau (Year 6).

The show was concluded with an energetic percussion solo from Year 3 Class Teacher, Mr Boddy!

On Saturday, 19 August, Redfield enjoyed a double celebration, as both our U15/2 and U12/3 teams emerged triumphant in their grand finals! The most remarkable part was, undoubtedly, the unwavering support pouring in from our incredible community. The vibrant crowd captured in these photos truly tells the story of Redfield unity and spirit.  

The U15/2 boys (pictured) fought valiantly, concluding with a 1-1 draw and proceeding to a nail-biting penalty shootout, which they dominated 4-3!

Meanwhile, the U12/3 team scripted an unforgettable ending, netting a last-minute goal to seize the final victory!

Cheers to their dedication, teamwork and incredible achievements! Let's continue to cherish these moments that define the spirit of Redfield!

Defending champions Redfield participated in the William Clarke Charity Shield again this year on Friday, 25 August.

After starting the day with a tough first half against William Clarke College, a clinical second-half performance saw us come away with a 24-5 win. In the second match, we went down to Arndell College in dramatic fashion with a late disallowed try. However, with William Clarke beating Arndell by 3 points in their fixture, Redfield ended up retaining the shield on for-and-against points.

Well done, boys, on a wonderful effort!

Ben and DomJaucian (Years 7 and 5) have now shaven their heads to help raise funds for their cousin Henry who is fighting brain cancer.

On 7 June, 2023, four-year-old Henry was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Since surgery, he has gone from being an energetic boy playing rugby and dancing in the living room to being wheelchair-bound and unable to talk. Henry is currently undergoing radiation treatment and, while he is slowly recovering from brain surgery, he has begun to lose his hair.

All funds received will go to various charities of the Field family’s choice who have been instrumental in supporting them over the last weeks, including Brainchild, Kids with Cancer, Redkite, Challenge, Mark Hughes Foundation and St Jude’s Cancer Research.
