I hope that you all have a wonderful long weekend and make the most of the mini-break before the real break in two weeks' time. It is amazing to think that there are only nine school days left in the first half of the year.
In the last edition of The Red, I mentioned the wisdom of a former commander of the US Navy Seals. Another idea of his about how to change the world was this: “If you want to change the world, find someone who can paddle along with you or surround yourself with like-minded people”. At the beginning of basic training, all trainees are broken into groups of seven and each group is given a boat. Every morning, they are expected to plunge through driving surf and paddle several kilometres. In the middle of winter, this can be a very daunting task, as the frigid swell can be very large and intimidating. Unless every paddle is in sync in the water and each stroke in time with the order of the coxswain, and unless everyone exerts the same amount of effort, the boat will turn against the surging water and be smashed back up on the shore. We are not going to change the world by ourselves: we are going to need the help of others, especially friends and family and, most importantly, Our Lord.
Self-discipline is doing what we ought, when we ought and how we ought, whether we feel like it or not. This is an essential virtue during study for exams. “I don’t know how to study!” can be a cry for help, or merely a distraction from the reality of the challenge of sitting at a desk and doing what one would rather not do. The consistent message from many experts is that the most effective approach is for a student to sit down to study for a doable period prior to a short break, and then repeating that arrangement. The staff at Redfield encourage the boys to study for a 45-minute time slot prior to a 15-minute break. Three of these sessions add up to a student completing more than two hours of study, an achievement which, for a lot of boys, is a huge thing. But once again, we need the self-discipline to make sure that the 15 minute break is only 15 minutes. With our exam period looming, let's make sure that we chat with our charges about their exam preparation.
Looking towards the end of the term, we have moved some things about. We have moved our annual Corpus Christi Procession to a date in September which will be communicated to you in time. This is so we can honour St Josemaria's feast day with a whole-school Mass and celebration on the last day of term. St Josemaria and his teachings, especially recognising the importance of parents and schools working together, are core elements of Redfield. The sanctification of ordinary work and encouraging all of us to work well and pray for one another are aspects of his teachings that speak volumes to us as parents, educators and students. This will be a great opportunity for our school to create an indelible memory for all.
As you may be aware, the Mass in honour of St Josemaria will be celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, on Monday, 26 June, commencing at 7:30pm. Please try to come along in gratitude, for without St Josemaria’s inspiration, there would be no Redfield.

Pared Cup
Pared Cup
On Tuesday, 30 May, a memorable event took place as Wollemi College and Redfield College came together to pray down by the dam. The tranquil setting provided the perfect backdrop for this special moment, marking the beginning of a remarkable day. The air was filled with a sense of unity and anticipation, as both schools gathered to seek solace and strength in prayer.
As the morning unfolded, the focus shifted to the eagerly-awaited Pared Cup, a fiercely competitive annual sports competition. Redfield had emerged victorious in the previous two years, establishing itself as the team to beat. The atmosphere grew charged with excitement as a blanket of fog slowly rose above the glistening waters of the dam, adding an ethereal quality to the scene.
With the first whistle's shrill sound, the two teams collided on the field, their determination evident in every stride. It was a sight to behold, witnessing these young athletes pour their hearts into the game, fuelled by the pride of their respective schools. Each Redfield boy was resolute, unwilling to relinquish the prestigious Pared Cup to the rivals from Wollemi.
The competition raged on, with both teams showcasing their skills and strategic prowess. Goals were scored, and the scores were meticulously tallied as the intensity of the matches continued to escalate. In the end, Redfield emerged triumphant, firmly asserting its dominance for the third consecutive year. This achievement was a testament to the unwavering dedication and teamwork of our boys.
Amidst the fierce competition, it was heartening to witness the true spirit of sportsmanship and fair play displayed by boys from both schools. Despite the intense rivalry, respect and camaraderie prevailed, making it evident that the Pared Cup's essence had been embraced by all. Both Wollemi and Redfield had reason to be proud of their students' conduct throughout the day.
In the end, there could only be one winner, and Redfield College secured its place in history with a remarkable third consecutive victory. The accomplishment was met with admiration and applause, but it is essential to acknowledge the valiant efforts of both schools. Well done to all the participants, for they exemplified the true meaning of healthy competition and demonstrated the power of unity and determination.
Huge thanks go to the Year 10 students who supported the event by refereeing the games. Their professionalism and encouragement of the Primary boys were very much appreciated.

Squishy Chicken Day
Squishy Chicken Day
The Primary Social Justice Group is excited to announce Squishy Chicken Day, a special fundraiser in partnership with World Vision.
This event on Friday, 16 June(Week 8) is aimed at making a positive impact by providing chickens to families in impoverished communities around the world. Chickens are a valuable source of nutrition, income and sustainable livelihood, as they provide eggs and meat for nourishment and also serve as a valuable asset for families to generate income through selling eggs and offspring.
We kindly request your support in making this fundraiser a success by making a contribution. Every donation, no matter the amount, will contribute to our collective effort of bringing sustainable change to those less fortunate and greatly benefit a family in need.
Let's teach our children the importance of compassion, generosity and global citizenship by coming together to support this meaningful cause. To participate, you can send in a suggested donation of $10 (or any other amount) with your child by Thursday, 15 June. Please ensure the donation is in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name and "Squishy Chicken Day".
Students who donate will be given one squishy chicken toy as a reminder of their generosity and support for every $10 donated. These will be delivered to the boys on Friday. If they wish to donate on behalf of a sibling, please include the money in the same envelope.
Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Captain's Corner
Winston Churchill once stated, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.”
If you are doing well in your assignments, don’t take your foot off the pedal; success is not final. If you’re not doing too well this year, understand that failure is not fatal. What really matters is that, despite what position, rank or situation you are in within your studies, it is important to persevere.
The Mid-Year Exams are coming up for Years 7 to 10 and the Trial Exams are coming up for the Year 12 students. This is a reminder for all students not to be discouraged if you feel that you're not as skilled or as gifted academically as others.
As an old wise man once said to me, “obsession always beats talent”. Persevere. Become obsessive with the idea of improving and bettering yourself in your studies. If you try hard enough, eventually you will reap the fruits of your labour.

Middle School Exam Preparation

During this week's Middle School Assembly, Mr Daryl Castellino (Director of Teaching & Learning) ran a session to help our students in their preparations for the upcoming Mid-Year Exams. Students received this handout outlining the importance of knowing what to study and different strategies for approaching the task of study. Having now received their exam notifications from their teachers and the exam timetable (see below), it is vital that the boys use the next two weeks to revise effectively and practise their skills so that they can perform to the best of their ability on the day. Kebab Day Fundraiser - Wednesday, 21 June (Week 9)
The SRC fundraiser is a kebab day, raising money for the SRC’s activities and initiatives to support student engagement with the College.
Further information will be sent out, including order forms, at the start of Week 8.
Student Attendance
I would like to emphasise the importance of your son’s attendance at school.
One of the clearest influences on academic achievement and school engagement is a student’s attendance record. The more a student is absent, the lower his achievement and engagement will be.
Importantly, this applies to punctuality at the start of the school day as well. Please ensure that your son is at school on time manner each day, well before 8:20am so that he can organise himself to start the first lesson of the day in the best way possible.
Let’s set our young men up for success by making sure they are in the right place at the right time.

Year 12 Geography Excursion
Year 12 Geography Excursion
The Year 12 Geography students have begun the final stretch of their schooling journey. Whilst on-campus experiences will be timeless, excursions off school grounds also leave terrific memories for the cohort. On Monday, 29 May, Mr Tanna took our Geography class on an excursion to Barangaroo and Millers Point, consisting of walks around the new urban development in this very modern area. We discussed the topics of urban development, decay and renewal that were evident as we walked through the city. Seeing these developments through our own eyes (rather than in a classroom) really facilitated engagement but, most importantly, it enhanced our knowledge of urban development in Sydney.
We learned about the history and old economy of the site and how such a large segment of the city has been transformed from a busy trading wharf into a modern commercial and residential district. Surprisingly, the top floor of the One Sydney Harbour tower recently attracted a price tag of $140 million and is still under construction. Moreover, the 159 apartments called Alexander and Anadara above the restaurants sold off the plan in less than two hours. The Crown Casino is also an impressive building and features Australia’s only six-star hotel.
After the trip throughout Barangaroo, we traveled north to reach the more historical site of Millers Point, a character-filled neighbourhood that is home to some of Sydney's oldest sandstone buildings. Millers Point recently attracted controversy and media attention when the existing working class and elderly residents were forced out of their homes by the State Government Housing Minister Pru Goward. The reasoning behind this was to sell these ageing public housing terraces in prime real estate location and establish additional public housing elsewhere in Sydney. Some commentators have suggested that this move was an act of social cleansing to make way for wealthier urbanites to move in and for Barangaroo’s new businesses to flourish.
We spoke about the urban decay and renewal in this area with a picturesque waterfront view ahead of us. We recently had our in-class assessment based on this fieldwork, so hopefully the results are pleasing!
Overall, this excursion really opened our eyes firsthand to urban development in the city we live in. It was a memorable trip that the boys will cherish. Some of the boys also visited Barangaroo at night before the fieldtrip to soak up the atmosphere!

Mathematics - The Subject that Counts
Mathematics - The Subject that Counts
The Maths Club has had another successful round of the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a ten-week period in over 200 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as in the live market. The next game will take place later this year. Details can be found on The Maths Club Canvas course.
Big congratulations go to Mark D'Mello, Kevin Nheu, Jackson Busch and Manan Saini of the syndicate 9Acc for finishing in first place at Redfield College. Their portfolio performance can be seen in the chart below.

Year 10 Commerce
Year 10 Commerce
For the past two months, the following Year 10 Commerce students have been competing in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game:
Charbel Abboud, Kalim Azar, Gianmarco Callegaro, Raphael Cheung, Benjamin Chocron, James Choi, Andrew Corry, Matthew Dove, Nikolai Dumas, Anthony El-Rahi, Paul Fortugno, Jonah Habkouk, Jacob Khater, Christopher Khoudair, Isaac Khoury, Tobin Kroeger, Andrew Makari, Patrick Manassa, Aryan Mehta, Eduardo Pazos Suarez, Sreehari Subhash, Tony Takchi, Amos Yassa.
By enrolling in the game, our boys were able to access $50,000 of pretend money to invest in the actual Australian sharemarket in real time. They had to compete with thousands of students from all over Australia. The game ended on Thursday, 25 May. Although the competition was extremely competitive, our boys performed admirably and participated with enthusiasm and persistence.
Whilst our students didn’t win anything this time, they learnt the following:
1. How the sharemarket works (primary and secondary markets);
2. Why share prices change;
3. The benefits and risks of investing in the share market and the importance of diversification;
4. Why businesses list on the ASX;
5. How to buy and sell shares;
6. How to make informed decisions about investments.

Primary Athletics Carnival
Primary Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday, 7 June, we held the Primary Athletics Carnival at Redfield. The weather was absolutely glorious, with the sun shining brightly upon us. The boys were full of excitement and anticipation for a day filled with running and fun, and they certainly were not disappointed.
The air was filled with war cries and cheers that echoed far and wide. The boys pushed themselves to their limits, running that little bit extra and striving to go faster. It was great to witness their enthusiasm and determination. They all participated wholeheartedly and gave their best efforts, which was truly commendable.
On what proved to be a highly competitive day, I would like to congratulate Altairfor emerging as the overall winner. Their hard work and outstanding performances led them to victory. Additionally, I would like to commend Hydrusfor winning the participation trophy.
I would like to extend huge thanks to our Primary staff who worked tirelessly together to make the Athletics Carnival a resounding success. Their dedication and commitment were evident throughout the event, ensuring that things ran smoothly and that our boys had a memorable experience.
I also want to express my gratitude to the many parents who attended the event and cheered on their sons and respective Houses.
I must mention our final event of the day, the Parent vs. Teacher Relay. It was a spirited battle but, ultimately, the teachers emerged victorious. Thanks go to the parents who competed, and I know some parents are already planning their training regimes for next year, eager for a chance at redemption.
Looking ahead, the Hills Zone carnival is scheduled for next term, and the team will be announced closer to the date. I encourage all students to continue their hard work and dedication in preparation for this event. We have high hopes for our team and know they will represent our school with pride.

NorthWest Primary Basketball Challenge
NorthWest Primary Basketball Challenge
On 24 May, our Primary junior and senior basketball teams showcased their skills at the highly anticipated Northwest Primary Challenge, competing against a challenging line-up of schools. The junior team burst onto the court with unwavering anticipation and intensity, dominating their initial two games effortlessly. Conversely, the senior team made a slow-moving start but exhibited great determination and courage throughout their matches. Both teams fought valiantly, aiming to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Remarkably, our junior team emerged triumphant, securing their place in the finals where they were set to face off against a formidable St Luke's team. Although the senior team fell slightly short, losing just one game, their tenacity and relentless effort were commendable. At the half-time mark of the junior team's final game, the score stood at 4-7 in favour of St Luke's. Despite their best efforts, our boys were ultimately defeated with a final score of 5-15. Nonetheless, all the boys were lauded for their incredible spirit and sportsmanship displayed throughout the entire day.
A special mention and thanks go to Mrs Parker for diligently keeping score for all our games and for assisting the boys with their equipment. Additionally, we would like to express our appreciation to the parents for the passionate support of their sons' teams. We eagerly look forward to the challenge of competing in this event in the coming year!

All runners ran great times at the event, with honourable mention to Claude Ayoub (Year 11) who finished fifth in his U16s race. There was also a great moment of sporting solidarity when Moses Afiouni (Year 12) supported his fallen fellow runner Michael Nader (Year 12) to cross the finish line after the latter sustained a hamstring injury while competing.
