We had a great celebration this afternoon of the feast day of St Josemaria. Thanks to all the parents (coordinated by CC Kos) who worked tirelessly together to prepare the sausage sizzle and special Aragonese cookies, a recipe from St Josemaria's homeland, for the students. Hopefully, it was a day to remember. It would be wonderful to see many families next Monday evening when we celebrate the Mass in honour of St Josemaria Escriva at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney. It is a special annual occasion for the school community. The first PARED-style schools in Spain began due to the inspiration of St Josemaria; these, in turn, led to some Australian parents and educators collaborating to found the PARED schools.
Recently, I heard the expression that "every generation has its own distractions". A significant new distraction is now in the game. Snapchat and other such social networking platformsmay be good in theory and a boon for keeping in touch with far-flung relatives and friends, but, for an increasing number of students, they are, at best, a head-filling waste of time and, at worst, an addictive outlet for the uninhibited use of inappropriate language and images and malicious gossip.
Here are some suggestionsif you want your children to avoid the bear pits:
- Do not allow an underage child to join social networking sites. Many sites have age restrictions; lying in order to join up is not a good start.
- If you allow your older child to join, you must be in the conversation. Be on your child’s list of "friends".
- Do not give your teenage son smartphones or iPods that are internet-enabled. Have effective filters at home. As Jim Stenson says, "Trust his integrity but realise he lacks life experience and judgement". He will not be able to walk safely through the internet jungle unless the danger zones are roped off.
- Expect sincerity from the age of six or seven. There are few lessons more important. A child who is not sincere will get around every rule you set and justify to himself his appalling behaviour.
- Your son’s mistakes are opportunities for him to learn. Don’t overreact emotionally, but address the issues energetically. Punishments are less important than commitments.
- Rules alone are not enough. You must use the teenage years to educate your son and to guide him into self-management. Talk often about this. Scaffold increasing autonomy. If your son does not learn self-management in early teen years, he can make tragic mistakes.
Winter has arrived, finally, and there was a good dusting of snow only ten minutes from where I live earlier this week. The traffic coming down the mountains on Saturday morning revealed the extent of the cold snap: they were covered in all white. There were also many cars going up the mountains so families could see snow, perhaps for the first time. It was a good reminder to encourage us to put our collective heads together to try to organise some fun, free activities for the family these holidays.
The first day back next term is Wednesday, 19 July.I look forward to seeing you all then. Have a wonderful break.

Strengthening the Roots
Strengthening the Roots

Last Saturday, Redfield hosted the 'Flourishing Parents' seminar. The purpose of this seminar was to give parents an understanding and experience of the spiritual formation that their children receive at PARED schools.
In particular, this seminar focused on the role of the school Chaplains in this formation. Tangara Chaplain Fr Paul Muller presented the analogy of a tree. In our students, and indeed in any person, there are certain fruits we would like to see: knowledge, skills, qualities, practice of the faith and so on. The branches that produce these fruits are dependent on the trunk, that is, the virtues or good habits, the formation of which are a key focus in our schools. But the strength of the trunk itself is, in turn, dependent on the roots. The roots are the different relationships that forge our identity, and the most fundamental of these are our relationships with our parents and with God. These two are intertwined: our relationship with our parents, especially in early life, shapes our relationship with God.
The role of the Chaplains is focused on strengthening the roots and, in particular, on fostering in students (and in parents and teachers) an awareness that God is a loving Father. This awareness can be broken down into three aspects:
- A realisation that we are not 'self-made' men and women but, rather, we have received everything from others and, ultimately, from our Father God. This realisation leads to a 'gift mentality': we are thankful and we desire to respond in kind. The main focus for this realisation is in Sunday Mass, and it is reinforced at school with the availability of daily Mass.
- The experience that the Father's love is unconditional. Although there may be a legitimate emphasis on expectations and outcomes in other aspects of our lives, when it comes to God, the emphasis is on the relationship itself. Success and failure are relative. The privileged place for this experience of God's love is the sacrament of confession, which is another key part of the Chaplains' work.
- The consciousness that Jesus Christ is the truth who sets us free. Without this, religion is reduced to some rules and rituals. It can even be viewed as an instrument of control and coercion. When a young person (or an older one) becomes aware that Jesus Christ is God, that he is alive, that he seeks our friendship, that he trusts us and we can trust him, then that person begins to understand how freedom and faith are compatible. Both rest on a relationship with Him. This relationship is forged in prayer. The talks, meditations and individual chats that Chaplains have with students are all aimed at trying to make them souls of prayer.
Strengthening the roots is a task both for Chaplains and for parents. In order to do so, both of us need to strengthen our own roots, becoming more aware of our 'divine filiation', our relationship with the Father. This also happens to be an essential part of the message received from God by St Josemaria, who inspired the founders of the PARED schools and whose feast we celebrate on 26 June.

The World's Greatest Shave
The World's Greatest Shave
On behalf of the Community Service Team, I would like to say a resounding THANK YOU to everyone who participated in this year's World's Greatest Shave.
At the time of writing this article, we have raised over $13,800, with donations on the day still to be tallied. This smashed our original goal of $10,000.
One of many highlights of the day was Mr Martin Fitzgerald having both his beard and head shaved! We would also like to thank Paul El-Chaar of Pure Hair Pure Body in Castle Hill assisting us with the provision of a professional hairdresser on the day.
Particular mention should be made of Jack Mejalli (Year 6) who, on his own, raised well over $5000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. What an amazing effort!
Lastly, it's not too late to donate. Please click on the following link to contribute to this worthy cause: World's Greatest Shave.
Thank you again for your support.

As we approach the holidays, I would like to remind you that information regarding the upcoming Primary parent-teacher interviews has been sent to you via email. These interviews will be held early in Term 3, and they are a valuable opportunity for you to meet with your son's Class Teacher and discuss his progress. Please ensure you book a time that is convenient for you, as the teachers are looking forward to engaging in meaningful conversations about your son's education and development.
As we bid farewell to this busy term, I would like to express my gratitude to our incredible students and dedicated teachers. It has been a wonderful but demanding term, filled with remarkable accomplishments and growth. Now, it is time for our boys to enjoy a well-deserved break and for our teachers to recharge their batteries. I encourage you to support your children in maintaining good habits during the holidays, with reading being a particularly beneficial activity. For those who have not completed the Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC), this break presents an excellent opportunity to do so.

Year 2 Learns How to Handle Dogs
Year 2 Learns How to Handle Dogs
In Year 2, our youngest learners have been embracing a wonderful new topic: Learning How to Greet and Care for Dogs. It was an exciting journey for our boys as they learned essential skills in dog safety and how to be responsible pet owners. With the guidance from Nicky, our expert dog trainer, our boys discovered the importance of understanding and respecting our furry friends. Through engaging activities and an interactive lesson with a dog named Joker, the boys learned how to approach a dog and recognise specific dog behaviours.
Here's what some boys had to say about the program:
Michael:"We were allowed to stroke the dog. He was very soft and cute. We were very excited to pat Joker the dog."
Benjamin:"Me and my partner were really excited to meet cheeky Joker and he was calm, well and cool... We learned about pets and safety around animals and it was fun and we also got to pat the dog."
Tobias:"I have learnt that Joker is a cheeky, funny and a big dog and I have also learnt there are four rules if you see an angry dog."
Nathan:"Today at our incursion, Matthias and I met Joker the massive, cool dog. He was as big as an African elephant!!!"
Nicholas:"I got to interact with Joker the happy dog, and we got to learn how to approach a dog whether it is feeling angry, scared or happy. It was a fun and educational experience!"
Dominic:"The dog's name was Joker. We also learned what to do when an angry dog comes up to you. The dog was so big and a red and yellow collar means it can bite hard and to stay away!"
Vincent:"Ruff ruff ruff! Andrew, Lucas and I learned to stay safe with an angry dog and it was really fun."
Marco:"Samuel learned that if a dog is wearing a red and yellow collar, it means that the dog is dangerous."
Christian:"Andrew and I went to pat Joker. We felt it and it was really tough and hairy."
Hayden:"I patted Joker's smooth skin in the Atrium. He was as big as an elephant!!!"
Daeyoung:"Joker the intelligent, fun bull terrier got to be patted as gently as a feather. We also learned how to behave with a scared, angry and sad dog. Now we know how to behave to our everyday furry friends and their behaviour was awesome!"
Gabriel:"This dog came to Redfield. His name is Joker and he was a big dog. He also liked to sleep all day and liked his biscuits."
Jacob:"Dean and I got to meet Joker and Nicky, his trainer. We learned how to be safe around dogs. For example, if dogs have a yellow and red band, they are very deadly dogs."

Year 3 Visits Longneck Lagoon
Year 3 Visits Longneck Lagoon
This term, Year 3 has been looking at living things in Science, so we took a trip to Longneck Lagoon Educational Centre in Maraylya on Tuesday, 20 June.
The class participated in three different activities. Firstly, the boys played a game called "The Web of Life", where they quickly discovered living as an animal in nature isn't very easy. Animals further up the food chain can come and interrupt a simple meal and natural disasters can completely change ecosystems.
Next, Year 3 walked down to the lagoon and dip-netted for some water minibeasts in the creek. Along the way, they spotted some arboreal and terrestrial termite nests.
To finish off, they carefully transferred the minibeasts they caught from the creek and put them under microscopes to try to identify them.
Thanks go to the amazing team at Longneck Lagoon for such an intuitive experience. Also, we congratulate all the boys in the grade for their excellent engagement, enthusiasm and manners throughout the day.

Primary Book Swap Day
Primary Book Swap Day
After the outstanding response to this term’s Book Swap, the Primary Social Justice Group will be running The Great Book Swap again on Thursday, 3 August(Week 3 of Term 3) to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and our own College Library. For The Great Redfield Book Swap, we are asking Primary boys to swap any unwanted, preloved or second-hand books and novels.
The boys have been asked at assembly to sort through their books at home and select a few that they no longer read. They may be books they did not enjoy or have outgrown but are still in good condition. Please make sure that the books are not ripped, stained or damaged.
On the day of The Great Book Swap, classes will be visited by the members of the Primary Social Justice Group to collect all the books and a gold coin donation for each book they wish to swap. Boys can swap up to five books each. “This will save our parents buying new books and help raise money to purchase books for those less fortunate,” agreed the organisers.
To learn more about The Great Book Swap and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, please visit https://edu.greatbookswap.org.au/.
Thank you for your continued support.

What a mad rush we have experienced at the end of Term 2!
The World’s Greatest Shave on Tuesday, 20 June was a great success thanks to the generous support of students, parents and the broader College community. Special thanks go to our Community Service Captains Dominic Ng(Year 12) and Isaac Chee(Year 10) for their organisational efforts. See Dominic's report in this edition of The Red for more details.
This was followed by a wholly successful and scrumptious Kebab Day, with Year 12 chefs making over 300 kebabs to feed the ravenous crowd. All proceeds from the event will be given to the SRC to provide funds for future initiatives.
The final Senior School event for the week was the Western Sydney Careers Expo for Years 11 and 12. Students spent their time asking questions and gaining insights into potential career opportunities after school, with most universities and tertiary institutions present on the day.
Lastly, please keep the Year 11 students (and teachers) attending the Washington DC Leadership camp in your prayers. We leave on Tuesday and have an incredible itinerary, including visits to the the United States Supreme Court, the White House and the Jefferson Museum, as well as presentations by guest speakers on the theme of ‘Becoming A Leader’. I know we’ll be exhausted but enriched by the end of our trip.
Well done to all students in Senior School for a successful Term 2. Enjoy the holiday, make sure to rest, and I look forward to seeing you all on our return in Term 3.

Years 7 to 10 Mid-Year Exams
Students in Years 7 to 10 have finished the semester in the exam room, showing the knowledge and skills they have accrued over the past months.
All students sat exams in the core subjects of English, History, Mathematics, Geography and History, and Stage 5 students also sat exams for the elective courses of Commerce, Design & Technology, Spanish and Visual Arts.
Exams make up an important component of the assessment program and provide students with essential experience of the pressure and time constraints of this style of assessment.
With teachers spending a significant amount of time over the coming holiday break marking these exams and writing reports, students can look forward to receiving constructive feedback on how to improve on their return to school next term.

Years 9 to 12 Philosophy
Years 9 to 12 Philosophy
On Monday, 5 June, Philosophy aficionados from Years 9 to 12 had the privilege of attending the 2023 Academy Learning Philosophy Day organised by Mr Fitzgerald. The event was held at Ascham School in Edgecliff and featured four lectures and an enthralling debate.
Led by speakers Julie Arliss and Dr Christopher O’Neill, we were challenged to deepen our understanding of philosophical questions. I particularly enjoyed the first lecture led by Ms Arliss on the gap between what we can know and what we cannot. In Ms Arliss’s second lecture, she explained the importance of reading and thinking laterally by letting us ponder some Oxbridge questions which are part of the eccentric interview process for two of the most prestigious universities in the Anglosphere, Oxford and Cambridge.
Other topics on the day included whether science can tell us how to be happy, and an exploration of the dangers posed to individuality by the analysis of Big Data to draw large conclusions from trends and the possibility of marketers and others “nudging” us towards certain behaviours.
The final event of the day was a debate. The motion was “That love is not a commodity to be traded” and it featured arguments for and against from Ms Arliss and Dr O'Neill. The floor was then opened to comments from students, and three Redfield students argued against the proposition. In the final vote, the majority voted against the motion. This wrapped up a captivating day of thinking. Our thanks go to Academy Learning for organising the event, and Mr Fitzgerald for inviting us to attend the Philosophy Day for 2023.

Year 12 Trial Exams Holiday Workshops
Year 12 Trial Exams Holiday Workshops
To best support and encourage our Year 12 students prior to their Trial Exams, a series of subject-specific workshops has been planned for the upcoming school holidays.
The workshops are scheduled during the first two weeks of the holiday period, as indicated in the schedule below. Your son received notice of these workshops several weeks ago.
Some workshops will be delivered solely by your son's subject teacher, whereas others will be delivered by external providers HTA (The History Teachers Association of NSW) and Connect Education. Connect Education is a well-regarded education provider which offers workshops tailored to the needs of individual classes. Your son's teachers will ensure that the workshops are valuable, focusing on content revision and exam strategies for the upcoming Trial Exams.
All Year 12 students are required to attend the workshops for their subjects.
These workshops are an excellent way for your son to fine-tune his preparations for the Trial Exams, and I encourage him to take full advantage of this support.
2023 Trial Exams
The Trial Exams will be held during Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 3, commencing on Monday, 31 July and concluding on Friday, 11 August. Normal classes will resume on Monday, 14 August, although for some students studying external courses, exams will continue throughout Week 5.
Click hereto view the Trial Exam timetable for this year. Your son received notice of this schedule a week ago.
Please note that, in the event of your son not being able to attend one of his exams due to illness or misadventure, he must provide independent evidence (such as a doctor’s certificate) explaining his absence. He should attach this documentation to a completed Illness and Misadventure Appeal form and submit it to the Head of Senior School, Mr Mark Anderson, upon his return to school.
Please refer to your son’s Year 12 Student Information Guide & Assessment Policy for further details of the appeal process.
Click hereto view the Redfield College Exam Protocol. This protocol will be on display in the exam room during the Trial Exam period. Students are to observe the expectations of this protocol during all of their exams.
