Last Friday, on the 21st of November, Year 3 went on an excursion to Longneck Lagoon. The trip was about a 30 minute bus ride from Redfield. They met their teachers for that day, Amy and Adriana.
Longneck Lagoon is located in Scheyville National Park and is a small school surrounded by wildlife. It doesn’t have permanent students, as it invites students from other schools to visit for the day.
At first, 3R and 3B felt a little tired, but their energy quickly returned when they spotted a kangaroo in the bushes during their walk. The students were thrilled and started cheering. Some were even lucky enough to see a wallaby! Throughout the day, they observed a wide variety of animals, from kangaroos to tiny fish and water bugs.
The Year 3s participated in different activities. 3R first explored a termite hole and then went dip-netting in Dragonfly Creek, while 3B headed to a field to play a game about the food chain. Later, both classes gathered in an outdoor sheltered area for recess.
There was also a classroom equipped with tubs, microscopes, and preserved animal life cycles. The students examined the creatures they had caught under the microscopes, observing them up close and guessing their species.
Afterward, the students returned to the benches in front of the classroom to eat their food and take a short break. By that time, the rain had become heavier, so the classes split up again. 3R wore ponchos and went to the open field to play a game about the food web before visiting Longneck Lagoon itself. Meanwhile, 3B studied the termite nest. Eventually, both classes met once more to say goodbye to the teachers and board the bus home.
It was a wonderful experience, and Year 3 would love to go again.
