Jesse Owens once said,“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort". This means so much in every aspect of our lives. Obviously, as in Owens' case, there is a clear correlation to sporting efforts. Just this week, I have witnessed sports classes engaging in preparations for next term's Cross-Country Carnival. However, this message also is very true for academics. If we have the dream of being first in the class and we wish to make it a reality, it will require effort, self-discipline, dedication and determination. What does the word determinationmean? Basically, it means firmness of purpose. We don’t hit what we don’t aim for. A key factor in the development of resilience in children and young people is a healthy self-esteem. We want our children to believe that they are capable, and to be confident in themselves and their ability to take on challenges and try new things.
Young people with positive self-esteem are more likely to feel capable and valuable, have healthy relationships with family and friends, and are less likely to engage in undesirable behaviours. Here are some tips to boost our children's self-esteem in meaningful ways:
1. Use compliments that are positive but believable. Help them think about their abilities and what they are capable of in a realistic way. For example, “You are driving so well for someone who is just learning!"
2. Love them unconditionally and accept them as they are. Tell them you will love them unconditionally, regardless of their failures and mistakes. Recognise the process of striving for something, as well as the outcome, as valuable and important.
3. Build their confidence without making them self-centred. Encourage and support them to dream big and work hard. Let them know you believe in them and are confident they will achieve their goals.
Make sure these holidays are well thought-out, timetabled and productive. Many times, teachers encourage students to challenge themselves to do the difficult things first so they can enjoy the rest of the break. Maybe we could set ourselves a goal for these holidays. Start out with the end in mind by asking what we are going to do this break? Something new, something old, something productive, something kind, something helpful, something hard, something I love, something I dislike... the list could go on, but the main thing is to create a list of things to do and plan them out.
There is no Easter Sunday without going through Good Friday first. The cross, suffering, sacrifice and hardship come before the glory of the resurrection. A grain of wheat has to die first before it produces many fruits. Please remember that, at Easter, we don’t have chocolate eggs without what Jesus did on the cross for each of us. Let’s say thanks by making sure we get to the Easter ceremonies over Holy Week.
As I mentioned earlier this term,a very important part of our Formation for Dads Programat Redfield is our monthly night of recollection, which takes place in our Redfield College Chapel. This is a great opportunity to pray about our sons, reflect on our relationship with our Father God and have some time with other dads at the school. We all need a little time out regularly to look after the most important relationships we have.
I wish you all a very happy Easter. I hope that these two weeks of holidays will help us all recharge our batteries to start Term 2 with renewed vigour.

The Easter services begin on Thursday evening with the Mass of the Lord's Supper. We call to mind the institution of the Eucharist and of the Priesthood. But the liturgy reminds us that these sacraments are inseparable from our calling to mutual service. In fact, the Gospel for the Mass is about the washing of feet.
It is hard to imagine what the apostles were thinking or feeling when Jesus got down on his hands and knees at the Last Supper and began to wash their feet. He was giving them a graphic and unforgettable demonstration of the fact that the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28). Often, human beings think of their relationships with others in terms of power: "I have power over this person, while this other has power over me". Jesus calls on us to rethink all of our relationships in terms of service. The more ‘power’ I have, the more I am called upon to serve. Jesus, who is all-powerful God, washes the feet of his apostles and gives his life for humanity. Some people have more explicitly service-based roles in life, but, in fact, all of our activities can be seen through the prism of service. The fabric of family life is woven with acts of service. Friendship involves an attitude of service. Even school work and study are acts of service: doing it well is a service to our families, teachers and peers in the present, and it is a preparation for taking on a role in the service of society in the future. A great deal of the spiritual and material good of the world depends on us seeing our lives as a call to service.

Redfield College Photo Day
Redfield College Photo Day
Over the next two terms, Redfield College will have two Photo Days.
- The first Photo Day will be on Friday, 26 May(Week 5 of Term 2). On this day, Primary classes and Secondary year groups will be photographed, and all students will have an individual photo taken.
- The second Photo Day will be on Thursday, 27 July(Week 2 of Term 3). On this day, teams and co-curricular groups will have their photos taken.
Orders for photographs can be placed in a number of ways, as outlined in the form in this link.
In preparation for Photo Days, please ensure that your son has the correct school winter uniform, including a blazer, on the day.
The students are to be photographed wearing their blazers without school jumpers or scarves.
Please attend to your son's hair and general personal presentation prior to the dates so that he looks his best.
The College policy on personal presentation is as follows:
- HAIR- A student’s hair is to be kept neat and tidy, off the collar and of consistent, natural colour. Haircuts that attract attention and all extremes of fashion are to be avoided. Hair that is too long or very short on the sides and long on top is unacceptable, as are sides that are short and not blended into the top, or undercuts and shaved partings that are overly distinct from other parts of the cut. The College reserves the right to determine whether a cut is acceptable or not.
- JEWELLERY- Items of jewellery are not permitted. Bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings and piercings are not part of the school uniform dress code.
- SHAVING- All Secondary students are expected to be cleanly shaven at all times.
- SHOES- Laced or slip-on black leather school shoes must be worn. Black trainers and athletic shoes, even if leather, are not permitted. Shoes must be regularly polished.
If you have any further questions, please contact me at the College.

Our first term is over already and it has been a productive and busy one. It has been wonderful to see our new students settle into the Redfield community so effortlessly. Teachers and students have all worked hard and are more than ready for a break.
It is great to see so many of our Redfield students participating in winter sports. I had the pleasure of coming to Redfield last Saturday and seeing the College buzzing with boys competing, having fun and trying their best. At our weekly assemblies, I have been speaking to the boys about having an attitude of gratitude. This should be very much a feature for our boys at sporting events but also in everyday life at school and home. Please encourage your sons to be thankful and appreciative.
The upcoming holiday presents a great opportunity for the boys to read. As always, the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is on and Mr Varrica and 6R have set the challenge to other classes to finish first. It is important that your son continues the habit of reading daily and logging his books on the PRC website.
From the first day of Term 2, the boys will be in their full winter uniform, which includes a blazer. I look forward to welcoming the boys back on Wednesday, 26 April.
Finally, I wish you and all your family a great Easter break and hope that you enjoy some high-quality family time.

SRC Meeting
SRC Meeting
The SRC has successfully held their first meeting for this term, seeing a plethora of intuitive and innovative ideas brought forward for discussion. After a quick ice-breaker and detailing the SCR's 'economic status' (i.e. how deep our pockets are currently looking for any student-run endeavours), the group of representatives from Years 5 to 12 got stuck into the positive changes they wanted to see happen in the upcoming term.
Ideas included a supplement to the packed 3520 bus that leaves Redfield every afternoon, wanting more meaningful ways to have an occasional mufti day, and even the humble proposition of beginning a personalised garden patch for the junior students.
Alongside the other SRC executives (Noah Daniel, Isaac Busch, Matthew Furcciniti and Patrick Sarks), I look forward to implementing these ideas of the student voice and holding future meetings to keep growing the SRC.

I would like to dedicate this final captain’s address for Term 1 to congratulating each and every student: well done for a courageous and consistent start to 2023! In particular, well done to the Year 12 cohort for completing the first half of the HSC. You’ve all worked incredibly hard and a well-deserved rest awaits you this Easter holiday.
Make sure you all stay safe this holiday season; look after yourselves and your family. A small tip I’d like to share with you for the break is plan tomorrow today. Following this simple piece of advice can keep us active and joyful, and will minimise the chance of idleness.

Congratulations to all students for reaching the end of what has been a busy term. The effort and engagement from Senior School students have been positive, with many enjoying the investment in new furniture in the Library to help them be productive and comfortable during study periods.
I hope all students have a restful and enjoyable holiday break, and I’m looking forward to seeing you refreshed in Term 2!
Year 12 Common Room
The moment has finally arrived! Year 12 students have been very patient with much-needed renovations for the Year 12 Common Room. The space was tired, requiring refurbishment and investment in new cabinetry and furniture.
Thanks go to Daniel Furcciniti, Isaac Busch, Lina D’Silva and Charline Shore for their assistance and support in various elements of this refurbishment.
Personal Presentation Reminder - Term 2
Students have a tendency at the start of term to return with haircuts that do not meet College expectations. Please remind them to read the following personal presentation guidelines.Note that students whose personal presentation does not comply with College policy may be removed from classes until the issue is addressed.
Public Speaking Workshop
Throughout the term, a group of students in Senior School has been attending a public speaking workshop run by Dale Rees-Bevans from SpeakersBank. Students have been learning the skills required to speak in different settings, adjusting their message to suit a variety of audiences and providing constructive feedback to improve the speeches of their peers.
The students benefited greatly from the experience, and we are looking forward to running a second series of workshops for students in Years 7 to 10 in Term 3. More information will be sent to parents at the start of Term 2.
Below are testimonies from Year 10 students about the benefits of the program:
“Throughout the weeks of this workshop, I have gained a newfound awareness of how to deal with inner nervousness when speaking to an audience. I have come to a new understanding of how much hand gestures, eye contact, voice projection and a smile can engage an audience when delivering a speech. Through the weeks of this workshop, I have gained confidence in giving speeches based on my opinion and telling stories whilst standing at the front of the room.”
“I learned many things during the six weeks of the public speaking course hosted by Ms Rees-Bevans. Some of the key things I learned were how to present myself to my audience with my voice and visually too, how to speak loudly and clearly and how some short pauses can actually make your speech sound more natural. I also learned about the importance of hand gestures and how they can help to keep your audience interested, along with learning how to write and give a good speech through the use of correct words and even how to present a speech on the spot whilst sounding natural at the same time. These are some of the key things I learnt during my six-week course.”

Lunchtime Junior Inter-House Basketball
Lunchtime Junior Inter-House Basketball
The winning team of this year's Junior Inter-House Basketball competition is Altair.
After a clean sweep of wins up to the final, the Middle School boys from Altair went into the last game as hot favourites against Sirius, and they did not disappoint. Despite a spirited display from their opponents, Altair ran out eventual winners 17-8.
Throughout the tournament, all of the boys who competed showed great organisation and sportsmanship, and they should be proud of their efforts. I would also like to thank the Senior School boys who gave up their lunchtimes to referee: Jayden Azzi, Amin Abboud, Alexander Kos and Gabriel Khoury.
Next term will see battle recommence with the Touch Footy competitions.

Redfield Rugby Gets a Guernsey
Redfield Rugby Gets a Guernsey
Old Boys Charles and Jacques Morrissey(Class of 2021 and 2020) are exploring their French heritage in Europe at the moment. They did a road trip/pilgrimage recently and, on 2 April, visited the Chapelle de Notre-Dame-du-Rugby in Larrivière-Saint-Savin, Nouvelle Aquitaine in south-west France on a special mission from the Redfield Lions Rugby Club.
Their pilgrimage task was to leave a Redfield Rugby jersey in the chapel, like so many Rugby clubs have done in the past ever since the chapel was established. The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Rugby and was started by Abbe Michel Devert after three young Rugby players in the town of Larrivière-Saint-Savin died in a car accident. The father of one of the boys, Morgan Bigent, now maintains the chapel and the museum attached to it.
Charles and Jacques delivered the jersey to Monsieur Bignet who was very moved to see that the jersey had come all the way from Australia. The jersey will reside permanently in the chapel once refurbishments are completed.
The dedication attached to the jersey reads: "Dear Lady of Rugby, watch over all your sons who play Rugby for Redfield College in Australia. You are our Mother, so keep us safe in the game and in our lives and bring us to heaven at the final whistle. Amen."
The Rugby Club is very grateful to Jacques and Charles for making the pilgrimage in this year when the Rugby World Cup will be celebrated in France in September and October.

Redfield Private Bus
Redfield Private Bus
We are pleased to announce that Redfield College will be offering a private bus that will service the Hills area for the morning and afternoon school runs, commencing in Week 1 of Term 2, 2023. This follows a very strong and positive response to our survey sent to parents last year about a possible bus service.
We have been working closely with CDC NSW to coordinate a route that takes into account the location of Redfield families in the Rouse Hill/Kellyville area and provide a private coach that seats 61 passengers fitted with seatbelts and security cameras. The TransportmePassenger App will allow students to tap on and off with their student cards commencing in Week 2 of Term 2. The app will also allow parents to track the bus's location live. Additionally, both the bus driver and the school will have a list of the students booked for the bus to ensure that students are picked up and dropped off correctly at the pre-allocated bus stops along the route.
Details of the service are as follows:
Mornings: Monday to Friday
- 7:00am Departs Seven Hills Road before Solar Avenue, Baulkham Hills
- 8:03am Arrive Redfield College Bus Bay
Afternoons: Monday to Friday
- 3:05pm Departs Redfield College Bus Bay
- 4:10pm Arrives Seven Hills Road after Bingara Crescent, Bella Vista
Please refer to the timetable and map for exact locations of bus stops via the link below.
A fee of $340 (plus GST) per term per student return for the bus service will be invoiced termly and payable at the start of each term for 2023 through Edstart.
There is a discount of 20% for the second child from each family (enrolled at the College concurrently) travelling on the bus.
The third and subsequent children from each family (enrolled at the College concurrently) will travel for free.
This link to the Parent Portalwill allow you to book your son's place on the Redfield Private Bus. If you receive a place, you will be sent an email with an invoice. As there are limited places available, please book your son(s) in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
We look forward to helping Redfield families organise safe transport for our students. Please contact Student Services if you have any further questions about this new service.
