Make sure these holidays are well thought-out, timetabled and productive. Many times, teachers mention challenging ourselves to do the difficult things first so we can enjoy the rest of the break. Maybe we could set ourselves a goal for these holidays. Start out with the end in mind: what am I going to do this break? Something new, something old, something productive, something kind, something helpful, something hard, something I love, something I dislike... the list could go on. The main thing is to create a list of things to do and plan them out.
Please also use this time to pray for our families who are struggling at this time. As I mentioned last week, Lucy Tudehopeis still facing major challenges to her health but has made some incremental improvements. There was an all-night adoration held last Friday for her recovery. Prayer really works, so please keep your prayers coming.
This message of prayer and support was brought home to me even more so today as I attended the funeral Mass of Argyna Santiago, a Year 12 student at our sister school Montgrove. When life is challenging and poor health - or even death - seems imminent, we need each other more than ever. It was great to see the families, classmates, Old Boys, Old Girls and teachers all in attendance with so much love, prayers and support for each other and especially for the Santiago family. Let this Easter be a time when we cherish what is special in our lives. Cars, jobs, houses, promotions, TikToks, footy games and YouTube are all irrelevant compared to the people we love and cherish and the relationships we have with them. Use this Easter to tell them you love them and give them a hug. You will not regret it.
We need to assure those closest to our side, as well as those who don’t even know us, that we have their backs when it comes to their needs, especially spiritual. This is also a great way to teach our kids generosity. A good list of intentions for the family Rosary enables our young men to focus on others and not on themselves. It’s great that we can form young men who are real producers to rally in the face of the cultural tide of selfie-taking narcissism.
There is no Easter Sunday without going through Good Friday first. The cross, suffering, sacrifice and hardship come before the glory of the resurrection. A grain of wheat has to die first before it produces many fruits. Please remember that, at Easter, we don’t have chocolate eggs without what Jesus did on the cross for each of us. Let’s say thanks by making sure we get to the Easter ceremonies over Holy Week.
I wish you all a very happy Easter. As we celebrate the new life brought to us by the risen Lord, I pray that these two weeks of holidays will help us all recharge our batteries to start Term 2 with renewed vigour.

MAP Growth Testing
MAP Growth Testing
Redfield College is committed to building a culture of excellence and helping each student achieve his personal best in all aspects of his education. MAP Growth is an assessment tool which helps to build a learner profile for each student so that his strengths and areas for improvement are identified and used to help him grow academically.
Students in Year 2 to 6 will sit three online assessments for Reading, Language Usage and Mathematics, and students in Years 7 to 10 will sit four online assessments for Reading, Language Usage, Mathematics and Science. Each assessment takes approximately 60 minutes. Once completed, each student’s report will be generated and uploaded on the Engage Parent Portal. Note that the information in these reports will be used to design learning experiences which meet the needs of each student and will not be used for the purposes of grading students for their school reports.
The schedule for the MAP Growth Testing for 2025 is outlined below.

Redfield Lenten Appeal - Mary's Meals 'Buckets for Breakfast'
Redfield Lenten Appeal - Mary's Meals 'Buckets for Breakfast'
A huge thank you to the entire Redfield Community for their overwhelming support of our Mary’s Meals Lenten Appeal! Your generosity was truly awe inspiring.
We set a goal of $2000 so that we could feed 50 children for one year. Together, we absolutely belted that goal out of the park. We raised well in excess of this target, collecting a little over $5100! This means that we can feed over 130 children for a year! This is truly an outstanding effort and a testament to the generosity and compassion of our College community.
It was great to see the enthusiasm of all our Redfield students throughout our appeal, from our weekly loose change “Buckets for Breakfasts” collections to our “Shooting Buckets” shoot-out basketball competition (congratulations to Samuel Laoulachof Year 8 for being our champion shooter) to our “Passing Buckets” rugby challenge in Week 9. A particular highlight for all students was our “Sponge a Teacher” event. Students relished the opportunity to soak their favourite (or not-so-favourite) teacher. A big thank you goes to Mr Jackson Ryan, Mr Carlos Del Rosario, Mr Martin Fitzgerald, Mr Stefan Drevikovsky, Mr Jason Hatcher, Mr Ben Nolanand Mr Matt Aldous(as well as one particular Head of Pastoral Care and Service Learning) who all put their heads on the line to raise funds for this great charity. Well done to Joseph Assaf(Year 12), our College Vice-Captain, for his pinpoint-accurate sponge throw to wet the Headmaster, albeit with an oversized sponge!
Congratulations to CastorHouse for being our “Breakfast Bucket” Champion House, raising a total of $982.95. They were closely followed by Hydrus with $793.80, Sirius with $788.45 and Altair with $662.00.
An initiative like this could not have been successful without the hard work and time of many people behind the scenes. A big thank you goes to our Mission & Service Captains Christopher Gebrayeland Jordan Hatcher(Year 12), to our Years 11 and 12 House Captains for motivating and collecting their Houses' “breakfast buckets” each week, to Marcus Alloggia, Nicholas Jaucianand Jayden Elias(Year 11) for running our “Passing Buckets” challenge and to Mr Leo Carolwho gave up his time to make our “Sponge a Teacher” frame. Finally, thank you to all our Redfield parents and students for your generous support of our 2025 Lenten Appeal. Your efforts will make a meaningful difference in the lives of children through the work of Mary’s Meals.
Vinnies Van
On Friday, 28 March, three of our Redfield students gave up their Friday night to assist those in need through participating in the Ryde Vinnies Van. These students were:
- Jordan Hatcher(Mission & Service Vice-Captain, Year 12)
- Ben Chocron(Year 12)
- James Tanna(Year 11)
Despite the inclement weather, this did not dampen the boys’ spirit. They traveled to two locations in Gladesville to greet those gathered with a warm smile and to serve them sandwiches, snack packs and hot drinks. More importantly, students engaged in lively conversation with those gathered on a range of topics from sport to hobbies to life experiences. It is this social connection which is so important. The boys did a fantastic job showing great compassion and empathy to all they met.
A big thank you also goes to Mr Luke Cinqueand Mr Chris Cullenfor leading the boys on that night.
The Vinnies Van is truly an amazing experience. I encourage all of our Stage 6 students to be involved in this worthwhile initiative.
Debating
On Wednesday, I had the honour of watching our Senior Debating Team in the CSDA Debating Competition against Oakhill College. The topic for this debate was “That building social cohesion is the responsibility of the Australian government”. As the away team, Redfield was the negative. It was a lively and thought-provoking debate, with both teams presenting strong arguments in support of their case. Congratulations to Luca Burgio(Year 11), Raphael Cheung(Year 12) and Jordan Hatcher(Year 12) who represented Redfield well and were awarded victory on the night.
If you have not had a chance to watch our debaters in action, I encourage you to take the opportunity to do so. Our Redfield debaters do a fantastic job and would love your support.
Wellbeing Corner- Helping your son navigate the online world safely
The digital world our teenagers inhabit is a far cry from that of landlines and handwritten notes of the 1980s and 1990s that most of us parents experienced when we were young.
As we are all aware, teenagers today are digital natives. They live in an age where over 90% of 12-to-17-year-olds use the internet daily. Most children surpass the recommended screen time. Nearly half of Australian children between 10 and 15 spend over two hours per day on TikTok. 86% of young Australians use Instagram, and 76% use SnapChat. Research has shown that over 60% of parents are worried about the impact of social media on their children’s mental health and wellbeing.
So, what can we do to help our son navigate the online world safely?
Tomorrow Manin conjunction with Respect and the Australian Governmenthave put together some key tips to assist parents to help their teenagers navigate the online world safely. Over the next few newsletters, I would like to share these with you, starting with the first two. I think these provide some valuable insights to help all parents navigate this brave new online world:
1. Learn about their world- Being interested in your teen’s online world builds trust and open communication.
- Ask your teen to show you their favourite apps, YouTube channels or social media accounts.
- Find out what they enjoy and why - this helps you understand their interests and values.
- Set aside time to explore new platforms together and ask open-ended questions.
WATCH FOR: Sudden changes in their online habits or secretive behaviour about certain apps and websites.
2. Encourage critical thinking- Teaching teens to evaluate content helps them avoid falling prey to misinformation.
- Watch videos or read articles together and discuss their credibility.
- Teach them to question the source: Who created it? What is their agenda?
- Encourage them to fact-check using trusted sources, such as government or educational websites.
WATCH FOR: Sharing misleading/sensationalised content or emotional reactions to questionable news or social media trends.

Growing Hearts for Fathers
Growing Hearts for Fathers
On Sunday, 30 March, Redfield hosted a day of reflection for dads. There were over 120 fathers present. There was a range of talks and guided meditations which focused on topics including:
- The psychology of fatherhood;
- The difference between 'superdad' and real strength;
- Connecting emotionally with others;
- Responding to challenges with calm.
There was also time for quiet reflection, sharing experiences and lunch! Many thanks go to the PARED Academy for putting on the day, to the Bendigo Bank at Galston for their sponsorship of the event and especially to all the dads who attended.

As the school term wraps up and the holidays begin, it can be tempting to dive straight into all the fun and games, but before you do, taking a little time to get organised can make your break even better and less stressful. A rough plan can help you make the most of your time off, even if it's just a few ideas.
Organisation during the holidays isn't about strict schedules; it's about giving yourself a little structure to relax, have fun and come back feeling refreshed and ready to go. By taking a few extra moments to plan your activities during the holidays, you will be able to feel fully refreshed and assured of your time well spent during the break.
In the coming days, we will enter Holy Week, meaning that Lent is coming to an end. It is usually a busy time of the year, but it’s also important to not lose sight of the significance of Jesus Christ’s passion, death and resurrection and how our small ‘conversions of the heart’ in preparation for Easter will give us a renewed sense of hope and love for God and one another. Through our own personal conversions, we can truly experience the joy of Easter, strengthen our faith and transform our hearts.
Have a wonderful break and see you in Term 2!

Junior Inter-House Basketball Competition
Junior Inter-House Basketball Competition
The much-anticipated Junior Inter-House Basketball Competition reached its climax in Week 9, as Sirius edged out Castor in a nail-biting 32-27 victory. Castor came into the final as the hot favourites after beating Sirius in the round-robin stage.
From the opening whistle, the match was played at a high tempo, with both teams showing impressive skill and teamwork. Castor put up a fierce fight; however, in the final minutes, Sirius’s composure under pressure proved the difference. The final whistle saw jubilant celebrations from the Sirius camp, while Castor could hold their heads high after a valiant effort.
With standout performances across both teams, this year’s competition showcased the talent and sportsmanship of all involved. Congratulations to Sirius on their victory and to every player who made the tournament such a thrilling spectacle!

We are excited to be supporting the charity Running for Premature Babies by entering a Redfield team in the City2Surf on Sunday, 10 August, and we warmly encourage our Redfield community (students, parents, siblings, friends, teachers) to join us!
All team members will receive a free t-shirt/singlet and are invited to the Running for Premature Babies hospitality tent at the race finish line at Bondi Beach. Fundraising is optional, but anyone who raises $300 will be eligible for race entry refund!
Funds raised go to life-saving neonatal equipment, saving the lives of sick and premature babies. The charity’s founder, Sophie Smith OAM, started Running for Premature Babies after losing all three of her prematurely born triplets in 2006. Since then, the organisation has raised over $9 million, helping save the lives of over 10,000 babies.
Join us for a fun community day out that will make a tangible difference to so many babies and their families. Please note that this is a ‘fun run’, rather than a race, and walking is welcome!
