Welcome back to Redfield and the start of the 2025 academic school year. The College is alive and buzzing with the sound of busy students. While it has been good and important for us to rest and rejuvenate over the Christmas and New Year break with family and friends, the return to school is a wonderful time of renewing friendships and catching up with mates, families and colleagues as we look forward to the year ahead, set goals and make plans.
2025 marks the first quarter century of the new millennium, a milestone the Catholic Church celebrates with a Jubilee Year, which Pope Francis has dedicated to the virtue of hope. This virtue has been the theme of our start to this year and will continue to be a focus throughout. We, as a community, share the hope that 2025 will be a great year for all our parents, staff and students, full of growth and progress, and also full of service, friendship and joy.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the new students and teachers who have joined Redfield this year. We welcome new staff members Milad Khalil, Joshua Woolnough, Jackson Ryan, Daniel Blazevic, Mark Munasinghe, Joshua Martin, Yossi Cascun, Mark Cinqueand Jakov Pavlovic. With the school roll increasing to 520 students this year, Chris Tanna has assumed the role of the Head of Formation at Redfield.
I look forward to seeing you all next Monday, 17 February for our Term 1 Key Parent Function starting at 7:30pm. This is a great opportunity for us to get together and meet our son's teachers and get an idea of what we will be focusing on this year. In my plenary session, I will take the time to highlight news and updates about the College and introduce new staff and programs. Obviously, I will be able to give some feedback about the Perspectives surveys from last year, as well as other areas of our school improvement plan.
I would like to finish this first Headmaster's entry for The Red by recapping the wonderful achievements of our Class of 2024 in last year's HSC:
- The cohort comprised 38 students who attempted 180 exams across 20 subjects at Redfield College.
- In total, there were 34 Distinguished Achievers who received a Band 6 result for a mark of 90% or higher in a particular subject. This ranked Redfield 93rd in New South Wales. This is a fantastic result for a comprehensive boys’ school and goes against the trends of education in Australia.
- The overall rate of Band 6 results was 19%. Almost 60% of all results were Band 5 or Band 6 (a final mark of 80% or better).
I am very proud to say that these results are evidence that a top student is extremely well catered for here at Redfield. Our teachers work very hard to ensure that any student who is prepared to work hard and collaboratively with his teachers can obtain fantastic results at our school. However, while I am obviously pleased with our HSC results once again this year, I take this opportunity to reaffirm our primary goal and purpose at Redfield: to work in genuine partnership with parents to form men of good character who, we hope, will make a positive difference in society.

Welcome to Term 1, 2025. I would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to all our new families to Redfield. It is so lovely to have you at the College. It has been so great to have our Redfield students back at school. I always love the start of a new academic year. It is great to see and hear the buzz of students returning to school, sharing stories of their holiday adventures and reconnecting with their mates. The beginning of a new school year brings great energy, enthusiasm and potential for the year ahead. One important way to help your son start the new academic year strongly is to ensure he attends and is punctual to school each day.
The Importance of Strong Attendance - Every Day Matters
At Redfield, we firmly believe that consistent attendance and punctuality are fundamental to your son's success and personal growth. Research consistently shows that regular attendance and punctuality correlate strongly with positive academic achievement, student outcomes and social connectedness (Hancock et al., 2013). Students who arrive late, however, not only miss out on valuable learning opportunities for themselves but can disrupt the learning environment and the academic experience of other students. Every day and every lesson matter. Just a little bit late counts. The table below illustrates just how frequent absence, even if it is only partial absence, adds up:
With this in mind, I would like to remind you of the following:
- The school day commences at 8:20am for all Secondary students.
- Any Secondary student who arrives late to school without a valid reason from his parents will be issued with a Blue Book infringement for lateness.Valid reasons include family emergencies, bus delays, medical appointments (these should be made outside school hours where possible), car accidents et cetera. General traffic delays will not be considered a valid reason.
We understand that there may be rare occasions when your son is unavoidably late due to unforeseen circumstances. On these occasions, we ask you to notify Student Services on 9651 4066 on the day of the lateness to inform us of the situation/circumstances. - If your son has a pre-arranged appointment before school, such as a medical appointment, we ask that parents enter a late note via Parent Portal prior to the day of the appointment. These appointments should be made outside school hours where possible so as to reduce the impact on your son’s learning.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this. Together, we can ensure that every student has the best opportunity to thrive academically and personally. I have included some strategies that may further assist:
If your son struggles with punctuality, please communicate with us. We are here to support you and your son in overcoming any obstacles he may encounter.
School Leadership - Year 10 House Captains for 2025
It gives me great pleasure to announce our Year 10 House Captains for 2025.
Thank you to all students who applied for these leadership positions. It takes great confidence and courage to do so. I was so impressed by the number and calibre of candidates. We truly have a great depth of leadership potential at the College.
Congratulations to the following students who have been appointed as House Captains of their respective Houses for 2025:
These young men were officially presented their badges of office at their Stage Assembly in Week 1.
I wish these new House Captains all the best as they begin their journey of leadership. I have every confidence that they do a fantastic job leading their Houses and year group.
Vinnies Van
I am delighted to announce that Redfield has been invited to participate in the West Ryde Vinnies Van service again in this year. This is a great opportunity for our young men to be involved in real service by assisting the homeless and less fortunate within our wider community.
Redfield has been allotted one Friday night shift per month. For each shift, we need three to four Years 11 or 12 student volunteers who will be accompanied by two Redfield teachers. More details of this service learning initiative have already been emailed to our Years 11 and 12 parents, including an expression of interest and permission form. This can be accessed at https://forms.gle/D3Np715b6xkpSp4bAand needs to be submitted by Wednesday, 19 February (Week 3).

Developing Character
Developing Character
In Primary, students learn about different virtues throughout the year. The goal is to help them flourish as human beings, achieve their potential and live meaningfully by developing virtues. Every two weeks, Redfield has a focus on different virtues, which can be found in the students’ diaries. Each virtue is introduced by a presenter at the weekly assembly, after which the Classroom Teacher reinforces it through activities in class and coaches the students using every opportunity during the week through meaningful praise, guidance and correction.
This term, we will focus on the virtues of order (Year 2 and 3) and study (Years 4, 5 and 6). Like any other virtue, order cannot be separated from the rest of life - it influences everything. It shapes our surroundings, our study habits, our work and our ability to reason and solve problems. Order also affects our spiritual life, including our dreams, goals and friendships with God and others.
During the first two weeks of the school year, students and teachers have ensured that we have had all the materials from the stationery list, in order to make a strong start. We encourage families to do the same at home, helping students organise their study space, school supplies, uniforms and daily routines.
"When you bring order into your life, your time will multiply, and then you will be able to give God more glory by working more in His service." - St Jose María (The Way, No. 80)
On another note, Father & Son Campsfor Years 2 and 3 are coming up soon! If you haven’t completed the form yet, please do so as soon as possible to ensure all preparations are in place.

For this edition of The Red, I want to highlight the importance of the attitude we need to fulfil various tasks either academically, at home or in extracurricular activities. As it is the beginning of the school year and many students are slowly getting back into our normal routines, sometimes we forget that the way we approach our studies can change the outcome of our assigned tasks. By understanding that an attitude of perseverance and the desire to overcome obstacles will benefit us, we will be more likely to finish our work on time or get much more out of our work. Our attitude towards tasks changes how we deal with stressful situations, and as inevitable and frustrating as they are, we feel better equipped to work towards the goals we set for ourselves.
This growth mindset to continue to be better in every situation is transferable to other areas of life, such as the chores at home or the endless running at afternoon training sessions. How we approach certain situations influences those around us and creates a better environment in which our peers are also inspired to improve and persist with their work. Maintaining a positive attitude towards our work does not come without effort, however. In the long run, though, it allows us to stay motivated and strive for success in our day-to-day lives.
Have a great start to the year!

A Strong Start to Secondary Life at Redfield
The newest members of the Redfield College Secondary School embarked on their journey with two engaging and informative Orientation Days, designed to ease their transition into Year 7.
The program was filled with insightful talks and interactive activities, helping the boys settle into their new environment while fostering a sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm for the year ahead:
- Father Philintroduced the boys to the Chaplaincy and Formation program, highlighting the importance of faith and character development at Redfield.
- Mr Daryl Castellinobuilt on this by discussing how virtues and values set the foundation for personal growth.
- Mr Stewart Hannan, the Stage 4 Coordinator, addressed common concerns about starting Secondary school, ensuring the boys felt supported and confident.
- Mr David Vassallo, the Deputy Headmaster, provided valuable organisational tips, equipping the students with skills to manage their studies effectively.
The first day was not all about listening; there was plenty of action too! The boys took part in a scavenger hunt, helping them navigate the school, followed by team-building challenges and the Wacky Olympics. These activities encouraged teamwork, problem-solving and a healthy dose of fun.
Day 2 began with Mr Oliver Foxe, Head of English, introducing the boys to the PEEL structure, an essential tool for structuring their writing. This was followed by some fun and games on the sports fields, giving the boys a chance to bond further. The orientation concluded with an introduction to Science Lab procedures, ensuring they were ready for exciting experiments in the year ahead.
Huge thanks go to all the teachers and staff who helped make these two days both informative and enjoyable. With a solid start and a strong sense of community, our Year 7s are now well prepared to embrace all that Redfield College has to offer!

Transurban Art Prize Winners
Transurban Art Prize Winners
At the end of last year, Daniel Leeand I (Alex Yi) went to the International Towers in Barangaroo to take part in an art ceremony that announced the winners and finalists of the 2024 Transurban Art Prize.
Daniel and I were nominated as finalists out of over 300 entries from Year 9 students from around NSW. For the competition, we had to create an original artwork with the theme of connections. Our entry was a collaborative painting of a broken Harbour Bridge in a dystopian setting, representing the damage and mending of relationships.
Upon arriving on the top floor of the tower, the host warmly welcomed the finalists with a collection of cakes and drinks before she announced us as first place-getters in the Year 9 category of the 2024 Transurban Art Prize. She then followed this up by handing us our own trophy, certificate, an extra print of our artwork and a brand new 256GB IPad 10th generation (which I used to write this report).
The experience was memorable for both of us, with Daniel saying that it was "a great experience meeting new people who had the same passion for and interest in art”. We both give special thanks to our art teacher Mr Stewart Hannan, the Secondary Creative Arts Captains and Transurban, who gave us this opportunity, and also to our parents and friends who gave us encouragement and support, which we appreciate very dearly.
