A very Happy Easter to all the parents, staff and students at Redfield, and a warm welcome to Term 2!It will be relatively short term, with only nine weeks, and a very busy one. On the academic front, the term will include a variety of assessments that will inform the Semester 1 Academic Reports, including Mid-Year Exams for Years 5 to 10 later in the term. Top effort from day one will ensure a semester report to be proud of.
There have been two important but different elections that have taken place over the past days weeks. We should pray for our civil leaders as well as our new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV. He had some beautiful words this morning that talked of the peace and joy of the resurrection and the hope that it brings. “Peace be with all of you! Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for God’s flock. I, too, would like this greeting of peace to enter your heart, to reach your families, to all people, wherever they are, to all peoples, to the whole earth. Peace be with you! This is the peace of the Risen Christ, an unarmed and disarming peace, humble and persevering. It comes from God, God who loves us all unconditionally.”
Our school community came together last Tuesday morning for a moving ANZAC Day Ceremony, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women, past and present. Students, staff and special guests gathered to pay respect to those who have served our country.
We were privileged to welcome three distinguished guests, Mr Geoff Irvine, Mr Philip Watsonand Captain Gavin Ridley, all long-standing Lions Club members and dedicated community leaders.
Mr Irvine delivered a powerful tribute to Nancy Wake, Australia's most decorated war heroine. His address shared the extraordinary story of the "White Mouse", a courageous woman who risked her life working with the French Resistance during World War 2, saving thousands of Allied lives and earning international recognition for her heroism.
Mr Philip Watson recited Railway Mates, a poem by Duncan Butler written about his time as a prisoner of war working on the Burma Railway. The poem beautifully captured the central theme of “mateship”, that uniquely ANZAC spirit of camaraderie, loyalty and shared hardship. Through vivid memories of wartime suffering and resilience, it reminded us that ANZAC Day is not only about sacrifice but also about the enduring bonds between those who stood shoulder to shoulder in adversity.
As we are now right in the midst of May, a Marian month, I encourage your families to channel Pope Francis and make this Jubilee Year of Hope practical: encourage your sons to see the good in difficult situations, to be grateful for what they have and to be optimistic about their ability to make a difference to our world.
I also wish all the mothers in our College community a very happy Mother's Day for this Sunday. It is a special day when we all get the opportunity to express our gratitude for your unconditional love and selfless sacrifice.

The Importance of Strong Attendance and Punctuality - Every Day Matters
In my first newsletter article of the year, I wrote about the importance of consistent attendance and punctuality to positive academic achievement, improved student outcomes and strong social connectedness. Our aim is Redfield is for every student to have an attendance and punctuality rate of 90% or above. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for their support with this. Overall, our attendance was very strong across all year groups last term. This was great to see.
In terms of punctuality to school each day, whilst this was solid, reviewing our data from last term it is an area we can improve upon. While I appreciate that some of this was due to initial teething problems with the change to the start of the school day, many of these issues seem to have been addressed. The concern is that students who arrive late miss out on valuable learning opportunities. Just a little bit late counts. The table below highlights the impact that regular lateness to school or absence can have on a student's education:
Period of absence | Equivalent per week | Equivalent per year | Equivalent over 13 years of schooling |
| 10 minutes a day | 50 minutes per week | 1.5 weeks a year | Nearly half a year |
| 20 minutes a day | 1 hour and 40 minutes per week | Over 2.5 weeks per year | Nearly 1 year |
| Half and Hour a day | Half a day per week | 4 weeks per year | Nearly 1 and half years |
| 1 hour per day | 1 day per week | 8 weeks per year | Over 2 and half years |
| 1 day a fortnight | 4 weeks per year | 1 year |
Every day matters, and every lesson matters.
With this in mind, I would like to remind you of the following:
- The school day commences at 8:20am for all Secondary students.
- Any Secondary student who arrives late to school without a valid reason from his parents will be issued with a Blue Book infringement for lateness. Valid reasons include family emergencies, bus delays, medical appointments (these should be made outside school hours where possible), car accidents et cetera. General traffic delays will notbe considered a valid reason.
We understand that there may be rare occasions when your son is unavoidably late due to unforeseen circumstances. On these occasions, we ask you to notify Student Services on 9651 4066 on the day of the lateness to inform us of the situation/circumstances. - If your son has a pre-arranged appointment before school or during school, such as a medical appointment, we ask that parents enter a note via Parent Portal prior to the day of the appointment. All appointments should be made outside school hours where possible so as to reduce the impact on your son’s learning.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this
Year 7 Leadership
The development of leadership and service is an important part of our student’s formation at the College. As part of our leadership program, each year group in Secondary has House Captains.
Last term, our Year 7 students had the opportunity to apply for Year 7 House Captain for their respective House. Thank you to all students who applied for these leadership positions. It takes great confidence and courage to do so. I was so impressed by the number and calibre of candidates. We truly have a great depth of leadership potential at the College.
Congratulations to the following students who have been appointed as the Year 7 House Captains of their respective Houses for 2025:
| Altair | Castor | Hydrus | Sirius |
| Dominic Jaucian | Henry Lin | George Tadros | Jim Michales |
These young men will receive their badges of office at our next assembly.
Wellbeing Corner - Helping your son navigate the online world safely
In our last newsletter, I discussed the challenges facing our young men in the online world and shared two helpful tips for parents - “Learning about their world” and “Encourage critical thinking” - that have been put together by Tomorrow Manin conjunction with Respect and the Australian Government. Over the next few newsletters, I will share some further tips to help us, as parents, navigate this brave new online world with our sons:
Tip 3 - Talk About Tough Topics- Ignoring negative or harmful content sends a message of indifference.
- When you see offensive or harmful posts, use it as an opportunity to discuss values and empathy.
- Ask your teen how he feels about what he sees online.
- Provide guidance on how to respond to or report harmful content, such as the eSafety Commissioner website.
WATCH FOR: Hesitation to discuss online experiences, changes in mood after being online.
Tip 4 - Model Healthy Online Behaviours- Teens are more likely to follow rules when they see parents practising them.
- Establish screen-free family time, such as during meals.
- Set a household rule: no devices in bedrooms, especially overnight.
- Show teens how to balance online and offline activities.
WATCH FOR: Over-reliance on devices for entertainment, difficulty disconnecting from screens.

Secondary Pilgrimage
Secondary Pilgrimage
On Friday 9 May, all Secondary students were involved in the May Pilgrimage. This pilgrimage was quite timely given the very recent appointment of Pope Leo XIV!
Since 2025 is a Jubilee Year of Hope instituted by the late Pope Francis, we chose four locations in Sydney with Holy Doors for boys to benefit from the graces and indulgences available, with each House travelling to a different venue.
The locations of the Shrines and Holy Doors were:
- Castor - St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta
- Altair - Shrine of Mary Mackillop, The Mary Mackillop Memorial Chapel, North Sydney
- Sirius - The Franciscan Shrine of the Holy Innocents, Kellyville
- Hydrus - Our Lady of Dolours Catholic Parish, Chatswood
The boys prayed the Rosary at the Shrines then returned to Redfield to be treated to a celebratory barbecue. This was followed by the whole of Secondary supporting our First XV Rugby team in their first home match of the season. Thank you to all Secondary staff for making this possible and especially to Mrs Anna Callegaro for organising the event. It was a great day to end a busy and productive week.

Redfield Vinnies Van
Redfield Vinnies Van
On the night of Friday, 25 April, I had the eye-opening experience of working with the Vinnies Van alongside Kevin Nheu (Year 11), Ben Gutierrez (Year 11) and Gianmarco Callegaro (Year 12). That night, we stopped off at two community housing properties in Gladesville to hand out some snacks, warm drinks and sandwiches, as well as chat with the very cordial locals. Since many of us are used to having barbecues and spending time with family on Anzac Day, we may forget that not everyone has such a privilege. Friday night was our opportunity to see that with our own two eyes. One thing that really stuck us during our involvement was the deep appreciation that the community had for our work - a sincere gratitude that we can learn from. As a whole, it was a positive experience that made us aware of the daily struggles of many Australians, and it is an experience that many more of us will take part in over the course of the rest of the year. Special thanks must be given to Mr Luke Cinque and Mr David Vassallo for accompanying us on this volunteering event.

Positive Peer Relationships Workshop - Years 5 and 6
Positive Peer Relationships Workshop - Years 5 and 6
Last week, a group of Years 5 and 6 students had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Positive Peer Relationshipsworkshop run by Unleashing Personal Potential (UPP). Across two dynamic and interactive sessions, students were guided through a range of engaging activities designed to build social confidence, develop empathy and foster teamwork.
The workshop focused on key life skills such as active listening, empathy, conflict resolution, working hard, staying social and the power of kindness. Through games, reflections and group challenges, students explored the impact of their words and actions on others, learning practical strategies to become better friends and more inclusive peers.
The UPP speakers guided the boys through many activities which helped students to grow in their sociability, they focused on many teamwork activities to teach skills relating to partnership and working together.
The activities were interactive and everyone was included and had a great time while learning about the importance of teamwork.
“I learnt how to listen with my whole body,” one student shared. “It really made a difference to how I talk to others.”
The facilitators from UPP created a fun and safe environment where students were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones, work together and support one another. A key takeaway from the sessions was the idea of “rising by lifting others”, which inspired students to give genuine compliments and help classmates feel seen and valued.
By the end of the workshop, students had not only strengthened their social skills but also gained a better understanding of themselves and how to positively contribute to their community.
Students were given a BFFT (best friend for today) which was supposed to help them interact with someone they did not know well. Thanks to the BFFTs, many pupils got to make new friends.
“It was the best workshop I’ve ever done,” said another student. “I feel more confident now talking to people I don’t usually hang out with.”
Overall, the Positive Peer Relationshipsworkshop has left a lasting impact and given students a toolkit of strategies we can use in everyday life, helping us to grow as learners, leaders and friends.

Year 7 Geography Fieldwork Excursion
Year 7 Geography Fieldwork Excursion
On Thursday, 8 May, Year 7 Geography students took part in a field excursion to Bantry Bay as part of their unit on Landscapes and Landforms. Although the day began with rain, the weather soon cleared, and students were able to complete a range of hands-on fieldwork activities with expert instructors, including soil testing, water quality analysis, field sketching and measuring tree heights with a rangefinder.
A highlight of the day was stopping at several points with clear views of the Sydney city skyline, helping students connect the natural landscape to the urban environment beyond.
It was an engaging and memorable day of outdoor learning.

Music
High School Musical
High School Musical
High School Musical was a resounding success, captivating audiences with its vibrant energy, memorable songs and heartfelt performances. Behind the scenes, the students of Redfield and Tangara played a vital role in bringing the production to life, pouring their talent, time and passion into every rehearsal and performance. The journey was a true rollercoaster of emotions, from the nerves and excitement of opening night to the shared joy of triumphant scenes, and, finally, to the bittersweet post-show blues as the curtain fell for the last time. It was a genuine pleasure to witness the Redfield students grow throughout the process, not only in their musical abilities but also in their confidence, teamwork and self-expression. Their dedication and spirit made the production not just a show, but a memorable and transformative experience for everyone involved.
I am extremely grateful to the Principal of Tangara Mrs Rita Sakr and the wonderfully talented production team, led by Mrs Cecilia Herrera, for welcoming the Redfield students and allowing them to share in an experience of a lifetime. I could not be prouder of our students and am blessed to have been part of this wonderful experience.
