It is the end of Week 4 already, and the year is moving fast! Thank you for the great turnout at the parent function last week. Really, this commitment is a genuine insurance policy for your parenting. Please set yourself the goal for 2023 of attending all three KPFs and all four meetings with your son's Mentor. Handouts and presentations from the KPF have been sent home to you as well.
This week, we celebrated Ash Wednesday with Mass and the distribution of the ashes for Primary and Secondary students in the Chapel to mark the beginning of Lent. This is a penitential season in the Catholic Church calendar to help us prepare to celebrate Easter. Traditionally, we tend to think of Lent as a season of self-denial, and we have many wonderful Lenten customs in Australia with fasting on certain days, or not eating meat on Fridays, and so on. Often, the boys will discuss with their Mentors something they are planning to give up during Lent. But Lent is primarily about conversion and, therefore about growth. Other Lenten practices include prayer and almsgiving, which means taking something up, rather than the tradition of giving something up that we are used to. I encourage all our boys to think about what they might take up, as well as what they might give up during Lent in order to help them grow.
We are hosting our first Open Day of the year on Wednesday, 8 March. Make sure you tell people about our new academic focus in 2023 and the number of the key initiatives that we are implementing here at Redfield. The staff and I are continuing to build a culture of excellence here at Redfield and using this academic focus to improve outcomes for the boys as we work closely with parents. This excellence has certainly been on display in our results lately. I mentioned at the KPF how wonderfully proud we are of the HSC results, but our NAPLAN results have been attracting attention as well. I mentioned that we had performed at a historically high level in 2022, so much so that we were ranked fourth in the Hills district and 72nd in the state. This is yet more evidence of how much value we are adding academically to the students at Redfield.
In The Red recently, we have been listing the student leadership teams. Congratulations to the young men appointed to these positions. What a privilege to receive such a vote of confidence, and what a duty to give a good example, to represent one's class or House and to speak bluntly but encouragingly whenever it will help. It is important that our leaders don't fall into the trap of some tin-pot leaders who think they are elected only for those who personally voted for them, opening the door to corruption and cronyism. In a true democracy, leaders are elected to attend to the welfare of all. In the coming weeks, I will have a gathering with the new leaders from across the College.
You will notice that our sports clubs have registration days. Our clubs play a vital role in building community and character, and their Basketball and Football teams win many games in the process, but that is a happy by-product. Let's never forget that children's sport is an instrument for character building, for building social skills as well as solid human virtues such as perseverance, realism and sincere, best effort.
Please keep up your prayers in your families for so many intentions. Let us keep the Pope’s intentions close to our thoughts and prayers. We must never underestimate the power of prayer.

Lent: Freedom to Love
Lent: Freedom to Love

The season of Lent is often described as a time of sacrifice and self-denial. While these elements are present, such a description is incomplete. This week in Chapel periods with the Secondary boys, we have been speaking about the meaning of Lenten sacrifice. It helps to go back to the book of Exodus, in which the Israelites spent 40 years passing from the slavery of Egypt into the freedom of the promised land. At Easter, we celebrate the freedom won for us by Christ, but the whole of Lent is - in some way - an exercise in freedom. It is about addressing those elements in our lives which prevent us from being free: attachments to food, drink, entertainment and so on, but also the bonds of pride, resentment, negativity and egotism.
Lent is about becoming more free, but it doesn't end there. The goal of that freedom is to love better: loving God, loving others and loving self. Jesus commanded all three when he instructed his followers to love God and one's neighbour as one's self. Selfishness prevents us from being free and, as a result, it impedes our ability to love God and love others. But selfishness also impedes the true self-love that Jesus speaks about. It doesn't do us any favours. It makes us less than human. Actually, it takes us down the path of self-destruction, so the discipline of Lent in fact helps us to be free to love God, others and our selves as we ought.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.
To provide consent for vaccination online, go to https://nswhealth.service-now.com/school,
You will need:

- Medicare details for parents/carers and your child.
Benefits of online consent for parents/carers:
- SMS notifications when vaccinations are given;

If you or your child do not have a Medicare card, consent can still be provided by requesting a paper-based consent form directly from our school.

*NSW Health is waiting for the outcome of a review by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination schedule. International evidence indicates that one dose of HPV vaccine provides equivalent protection to two-dose. If a one dose-schedule is endorsed, NSW Health will contact all parents of students who have been consented for two doses of the vaccine and also parents of students who have received one dose of HPV vaccine (to advise that they are up to date and do not require any further doses).

Primary Swimming Carnival
Primary Swimming Carnival
The Redfield Primary Swimming Carnival was held on Wednesday, 15 February in gloriously sunny conditions once again at the Hawkesbury Oasis Leisure Centre. There was a wonderful atmosphere throughout the whole day and we witnessed some sensational individual performances in the 50-metre pool, whilst the other swimmers participated in some super-fun 25-metre novelty races and spent time in the lagoon pool and on the slide.
Redfield carnivals promote the aspects of having fun as well as rewarding participation and achievement. The terms “having a go” and “giving your best” are about actions rather than words. There were many terrific examples of boys pushing themselves outside their comfort zones, digging deep and giving their all. Well done, boys!
Congratulations go to our age champions who are listed below:
The parental support was also terrific, and I would like to make special mention of the entire Primary staff and the attending Year 11 students who were fantastic in their roles as officials, ensuring that we completed yet another fun-filled and hugely successful swimming carnival.
The final point scores for the 2023 swimming carnival were as follows:
Congratulations to both SIRIUSand HYDRUSfor taking out this year’s winning honours at the swimming carnival.

Over the summer holidays, I watched an all-time classic and, in my opinion, one of the greatest movies of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life(1946). This Christmas classic tells the story of George Bailey, a man who is shown what life would have been like if he had never been born. Throughout the film, we see how George’s life has touched the lives of those around him, and how his acts of kindness and generosity have made a meaningful difference in the world. I would highly encourage you to see it if you’re interested.
Although this movie is almost 80 years old, it still provides a powerful and timeless reminder of the impact of Christian charity in society today - the idea of giving selflessly and helping those in need. Ultimately, Christian charity is about putting others before oneself through both words and actions. This is a true mark of a good man living in the Christian spirit to create positive change. It’s not just about giving money or material possessions, but also about the giving of ourselves, particularly through time, energy, andlove. Whether it be through acts of kindness such as helping a friend in need or volunteering our time for others, or simply by offering a word of encouragement and not talking behind someone’s back. Doing these small deeds can make a huge difference to the people around you, like we see in the example of George Bailey.
As we begin the Lenten season, I would especially like to encourage all of us to reflect on the values of Christian charity and to find ways to live it out actively in the service of others - to be kind, generousandselfless.

Year 7 Barbecue
Year 7 Barbecue
On Monday, 20 February, Year 7 enjoyed a "Welcome to Secondary" barbecue prepared and hosted by Class Parents Anthony and Celina Daniel (parents of Enea), ably assisted by Stephen Leung (father of Leonardo).
Our newest additions to Secondary had a wonderful time eating, chatting and enjoying each other's company at the first of what will (hopefully!) be many such social events over the years to come.
Our thanks go to Mrs and Mrs Daniel and Mr Leung for their generosity and initiative in organising this event.

On Thursday, 23 February, Year 7 students were very excited to receive their school-issued devices as a part of Redfield's 1:1 Technology Program.
The boys were expertly stepped through the many features of their brand-new Dell Chromebooks by members of the Pared IT team and, after the onboarding session, were able to use them in the classroom straight away.
These powerful learning tools have now been entrusted to the Class of 2028 to use in a productive and responsible manner.
