This week marked the beginning of Holy Week, the greatest celebration in the Church’s liturgical calendar. Friday and Monday are not just public holidays or days off school, but days to commemorate with reverence, solemnity, gratitude, joy and celebration with family and friends. We have been undertaking the Stations of the Cross during Religion periods these past weeks, and the message that is conveyed is that of the loving saviour who gave his life for us. The greatest love a man can have for another is to lay down his life for him. In these last days of Lent, let us redouble our efforts to live out the radical call to love others in our homes and communities by choosing lenten practices that seek to make the lives of the others smoother and easier. Let’s remind our men that Easter Sunday comes after the cross on Good Friday, resisting distractions and indulgences like Friday night footy and eating hot cross buns too early.
On 5 March, we had an Open Day with more than 200 RSVPs. Our Marketing team turned up in full and did an outstandingly professional job. Our student guides were, once again, remarkable in presenting the school to interested families. A special thank you goes to Gabriel Choi, our College Captain, who presented to prospective parents. It was evident on the day why we are facing such enrolment pressures, with the number of enquiries growing every week, especially in Primary. Currently, our main enrolment opportunities are in Year 2 2025, so if you have any family, friends or neighbours who might be interested, please encourage them to act now and not delay.
Congratulations to all our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 boys on completing the NAPLAN exams over the last two weeks - an outstanding effort all around. A big thank you goes to Mr Castellino, Mr Corke, Mr Nolan and the IT team for successfully navigating through the complexities of such a significant exam. I am looking forward to sharing the results with you later in the year.
You may have noticed that the NSW Government is currently running a campaign called Every Minute Counts. Aligned with this initiative, we aim to encourage and support consistent attendance to foster not only academic growth but also social, physical and emotional wellbeing. Additionally, it's vital to minimise tardiness and early departures. We ask all our families to support our students in getting the most out of their educational opportunities by being present and punctual whenever possible.
I wish you all a blessed and holy Easter, and I look forward to seeing all the boys back for the final two weeks of school after this short break.

Years 8 & 9 House Captains
Years 8 & 9 House Captains

At Redfield, we are blessed to have such an excellent calibre of student leader in a range of areas of school life, from our College Captains to our Co-curricular Captains and House Captains. These young men represent the school well and help contribute to enriching the lives of our students at Redfield.
It was great to be able to officially present and commission our latest additions to our Student Leadership Team for 2024 - our Years 8 and 9 House Captains - at our last whole-school assembly in Week 8. It was also lovely to have so many of the incoming captains' parents attend the assembly.
Congratulations to the following students on their appointment as House Captains for their respective Houses and year groups for 2024:
As Years 8 and 9 House Captains, these young men will:
- act as ambassadors for their respective Houses and the school at various functions throughout the year, such as carnivals, inter-House competitions and Open Days.
- assist their Year 12 House Captains in building House spirit and unity through a range of events, activities and initiatives within Admin groups or at various school carnivals.
- encourage their peers in their House to participate and to challenge themselves to get involved and to do their very best.
- raise any concerns or ideas with their Year 12 House Captains.
I know these students will do a fantastic job in building upon our College’s traditions, spirit and strong legacy of leadership. They will fulfil their roles with diligence, be strong role models for all and represent their school and Houses well.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the students who applied for these roles. The candidature was very strong this year. Well done to all boys.
We, as a school community, wish these new leaders well as they embark on their leadership journey. I encourage each of us to support them in their role.
Nominations and appointments for Year 7 House Captains will take place in Term 2.

Apologetics Club
This term, at the initiative of Christopher Fernandez (Year 10), Redfield has begun running an Apologetics Club which aims to provide a forum for the genuine exploration of issues of faith. Coordinated by Mr Richa and Mr Fitzgerald, these lunchtime meetings have looked at the topics of human suffering, the Crusades and abortion, explaining the Church's response to these matters in comparison to other points of view. With an average of approximately 50 students attending each of the three sessions so far, we look forward to openly addressing many more topics of discussion and answering many questions in the future.

It certainly has been a busy past few weeks with a lot of news to share.
On Tuesday, 12 March, several Year 6 Redfield students attended the HZSA Football trials. Three Year 6 boys - Marcus Bazouni, Daniel Londosand Elijah Doueihi- successfully made it through the trial and will represent HZSA at CIS level on Thursday, 4 April. Well done to all the boys who tried out, and I wish Marcus, Daniel and Elijah all the best at the next stage.
Primary has also seen success on the Basketball court, with Ethan Gao(Year 6) being selected for the CIS Boys Basketball team. He will compete in Newcastle at the end of May. It is a tremendous effort to make the CIS team, and Ethan will enjoy competing against the best young basketballers in the state. I am sure that Ethan will represent Redfield proudly, and I wish him all the very best.
At our recent assembly, I had the pleasure of presenting our Redfield Primary Swimming Champions to the whole school. The swimmers listed below were recognised with medals for their fine efforts at our swimming carnival.
| Age 8 | Age 9 | Age 10 | Age 11 | Age 12 | |
| 1 | Tobias Gregory | Ethan Sahyoun | William Cox | Sergio Mulkeen-Suarez | Xavier Ting |
| 2 | Zachary Ng | Isaac Yamine | Lawson Sebire | Lachlan Haifa | Emerson Sebire |
| 3 | Joseph Tannous | Samuel Eckersley | Emmanuel Kwak | Quade Jimenez | Russell Mandla |
William Coxwas also awarded two special medals recognising his recent school record-breaking swims in the 10 years 50m Backstroke and Breaststroke events.
With our recent swimming success at the HZSA, several boys were selected to attend the CIS Swimming Carnival on Wednesday, 27 March. The team consisted of:
William Cox(Year 4)
Lachlan Haifa(Year 5)
Sergio Mulkeen-Suarez(Year 6)
Ethan Sahyoun(Year 4)
Emerson Sebire(Year 6)
Xavier Ting(Year 6)
On Thursday, 21 March, 11 Years 5 and 6 students represented Redfield at the HZSA Touch Football Gala Day. We were fortunate to have two high school students who also attended as referees; Jackson Busch(Year 10) and Henry Dehany(Year 8). They both did a wonderful job and we are grateful for their assistance. Our athletes performed exceptionally well, reaching the final undefeated. Unfortunately, they faced a tough team in Rouse Hill Anglican in the final. Redfield tried hard but went down 5-1. Throughout the day, the boys played well as a team and showed that their effort at the lunchtime training sessions paid off. I was very proud of their performance, and their parents were too. As a result of the team's excellent achievement, the following Year 6 boys have been nominated to attend the CIS touch tryouts: Elijah Doueihi, Daniel Londosand Isaiah Saade. We wish them well at the next stage.
A lot certainly has been happening, and with Primary sports training started and winter season games soon to commence, it is only going to get busier. It is nice that Easter is upon us, and it is a great opportunity to stop to take a breath and reconnect with our loved ones. I wish all of our Redfield families a wonderful Easter break and look forward to the final few weeks of term.

Year 2 Easter Figures
Year 2 Easter Figures
As Easter approaches, Year 2 explored some fun symbols and painted plaster figures of them.
Eggs are like nature's surprise packages, representing new beginnings. We painted them bright colours so that we can hide them and hunt for them to celebrate Jesus rising on Easter morning. Some boys painted flowers, trees and other plants as reminders that Easter is all about fresh starts and happiness.
The most popular figures we painted were Easter bunnies. They're not just fluffy friends but symbols of new life and growth. With their hoppy spirit, they remind us that Easter is a time for fun and joy!
So, as we enjoy Easter, let's remember these Year 2 Easter symbols and the special meanings they bring. Happy Easter, everyone!

Year 4 Good Friday Crosses
Year 4 Good Friday Crosses
Guided by their Art teachers, the Year 4 boys created their own paper crosses, exploring the themes of sacrifice, redemption and hope that are central to Good Friday. The boys later had the opportunity to reflect on the symbolism of the cross and its profound significance in our Christian faith by adding Ash Wednesday crosses as a border to remind us of our Lenten promises.
The boys have their Good Friday crosses displayed in the Primary hallway.

Captain's Corner
Captain's Corner

For this edition of Captain’s Corner, I would like to briefly talk about Redfield sports. It’s been a fantastic start to the season for the Basketball and Football teams. As part of the First V, I couldn’t ask for any more: the large crowds, brand new courts, the drums… there's been such a hype and the atmosphere has been LOUD! I highly encourage the boys who haven’t come yet to give it a try, either by playing in a team or coming along to matches to support Redfield.
Sports are a crucial part of student life. During my time at Redfield, I’ve formed a belief that the most effective character building comes from sports. From the games to the training and the individual workouts, it requires resilience, teamwork and perseverance. Even for the Year 12 students, it is ever more crucial to go outside and play sports.
So, to finish off, I ask all boys to get involved in more sporting opportunities. Whether it's by joining a new team or watching the Lions score, a healthy body creates a healthy mind.

Cybersafety Police Presentation
Cybersafety Police Presentation
On Tuesday, 26 March, we were privileged to have our Police Youth Engagement Officer Senior Constable Lynda Hartvisit Redfield to deliver a talk to our Years 7 and 8 students on cybersafety.
In a world in which technology is so much, and increasingly, a part of our everyday lives, teaching our students about cybersafety is crucial. These formative years mark the time when students are increasingly engaging with online platforms, social media and digital communication tools. It is important that we equip our students with the awareness, knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely.
Senior Constable Hart’s presentation covered a range of topics, including online privacy, reputation and relationships. It provided valuable information and tools to upskill and assist our Years 7 and 8 students to navigate the online world, including advice on:
- ways to maintain privacy setting online.
- posting comments and images safely.
- digital footprint and reputation (and their impacts).
- cyberbullying and practical advice on how to effectively address it when it occurs.
- how to respond to and report any content of concern.
A big thank you goes to Senior Constable Hart for sharing her time and expertise with our boys. I know our students benefited from her talk. Callum Minihan(Year 8) also deserves recognition for thanking Senior Constable Hart on behalf of the Stage 4 students.

Brothers Xavier (Year 5) and Aidan Shalala (Year 4) competed in the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) NSW Open tournament on 17 March.
Aidan came first in point sparring in the 8-9 years male division, and Xavier came second in clash sparring in the 10-11 years male division.
They competed against other kids their age from different dojos in NSW, and they will now be competing in the annual ISKA MMA nationals later this year.
They have been doing MMA since they were three years old, so this was a great achievement for them. Well done, boys!

James Engesser (Class of 2023) - NSW Shape Exhibition
Redfield College talent has been excellently represented by a recent graduate at the SHAPE Exhibition Gala.
The launch of the 2023 SHAPE Exhibition was held at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct on Monday, 18 March, and this year is very special for us, as this is the first time one of our HSC Design & Technology students, James Engesser (Class of 2023), has been included in the showcase. James's project, the solar-powered 'Hiker's Aid Station', wonderfully represents the excellent capacity, creativity and potential of D&T students at our College.
The SHAPE Exhibition features a very select series of outstanding projects produced by Technologies students across NSW each year, in the areas of Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles & Design.
Only 40 projects were selected for the exhibition this year, around a third of which are Design & Technology-specific projects.
I congratulate James on his remarkable achievements during his participation in the Design & Technology courses at Redfield College, and wish him great success in his future endeavours.
The video of the Gala Opening of the Exhibition is available here.

Brendan Weber (Class of 2022) - WSU Solar Team
Brendan Weber (Class of 2022) - WSU Solar Team
On Thursday, 21 March, the Design & Technology Department had the pleasure of hosting the Western Sydney Solar Team for an incursion involving our Primary and Secondary students.
The Western Sydney Solar Team is a group of young engineers and scientists at Western Sydney University who work together to design and build cutting-edge solar-powered cars for various solar race challenges worldwide. One of the races that the team regularly participates in is the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge which covers around 3000 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide and receives strong international attention, attracting competing teams from all around the world.
The catalyst for this visit was that one of our Old Boys, Brendan Weber(Class of 2022), is studying Engineering at Western Sydney University and is now part of the Solar Team.
During this incursion, students had the chance to ask questions and get a close look at the prototype and other props that our visitors brought with them to show us.
This is what Mr Peter Harb (Mentor and Teacher) had to say about the incursion:
The Year 4 students enjoyed their visit to the COLA last week to witness the Solar Challenge Project. The students listened as the project designers explained the objective and achievements of their project. They were then given some time to ask questions and to move around and inspect the project up close. Our boys were thrilled to discover that one of our own Old Boys was part of the team of designers. You could see their eyes light up as they imagined what the future might look like with such designs. Thanks go to Mr Carol and his team for the opportunity!
More information about the Western Sydney Uni Solar Car Team can be found here.
Information about the World Solar Challenge can be found here.
From a Year 8 Technology student in 2018 to a WS Solar Team Member in 2024...
Here's a picture of Old Boy Brendan Weber(Class of 2022) engineering a balsa wood bridge, next to a photo of the rocket car he designed and produced when he was in Year 8.
The D&T workshop at Redfield College is the learning environment where many students discover and develop their capabilities as builders, makers, designers and engineers.
